For those of you who've done the SCD, did you do the de-tox first like recommended, or did you just cut back / cut out sugars and carbs and other triggers as-needed?

The SCD website says you need to follow the plan fanatically for it to work, but it's also more geared towards intestinal disorders.

Also, has anyone had success with the gluten-free diet?

Great! Did you do the de-tox first, or pick and choose what foods to eliminate, or do you follow it fanatically?

Great! Did you do the de-tox first, or pick and choose what foods to eliminate, or do you follow it fanatically? No i did no de-tox ,i just started the diet ,during this time i devoloped ibs which happens to alot of people with acid reflux.I then became dedicated to the diet removing even vitamins i was taking which had small amounts soy, rice flour, corn etc.I now have the ibs and lpr under control and been able to resume having a morning cup of coffee, eating tomato, citrus all of which really affected my lpr.I devoloped lpr one year ago, went to doctor with swollen lymph glands and many of the symptons described on this board doc thought i had throat cancer, i had been long time smoker, after x-rays c-scans and other tests proved negative he put on ppi, which helped but i devoleped side affects after two weeks. i began searching for alternatives such as digest rc ,orange peel extract, digestive enzymes, which my be enough for those with standard reflux. I came upon the scd diet on these boards and thought the diet diffcult to follow after some hesitation i decided to give it a try,it has been well worth it.Hope this helps, sorry for poor typing ,spelling etc. one finger typist[lol]. if you have other questions feel free to ask.

So you don't eat any complex carbohydrates on this diet?? Could it just be that your reflux itself was caused by a wheat allergy? Or do you actually believe this specific diet got rid of your LPR? Do you ever cheat?

Do you ever cheat?Yes, no complex carbohydrates.Wheat allergies typically occur soon after eating wheat protein never happened with me,acidic foods, coffee set my throat and mouth on fire with a few minutes.I have done nothing but the scd diet for the past 6 months so yes i know it works for me and no i never cheat.I could go into why i think it works ,but i type to slow. If you put in scdi nfo in ****** lots info available.

I have seriously been considering this approach...did you buy the book? I was told by another person with GERD/LPR that everyone she knows that had tried this approach "cured" themselves. I was also told that you can drink grape juice????? That sounded a little odd to me.
Anyway, any information would be greatly appreciated..
Many Thanks

cyberram - how long before you noticed results?

crazylife - so far i am going based on the SCD websites

answers - i read on the boards that some people have eliminated their reflux doing a gluten-free diet. No complex carbs allowed.

I've been gradually eliminating "illegal" foods for the last couple days and I already feel better - less phlegm in my throat, but I still have a bad cough. Not eating chocolate is incomprehensible for me, but it seems like if I control my diet in every other area, I might be ok.

I'm also experimenting w/ gluten-free foods - had some pasta last night and today, without any immediate reactions.

However, thinking that reactions might not always be immediate. I think if I eat a trigger food at night, it can still affect me in the morning. It's hard to tell though because the morning cough could be from the switch from horizontal to vertical, or from tea (just switched from green tea (caffeinated) to chamomile (no caffeine).

I have read that it takes up to 6 months for your larynx and parynx to heal and only recently tried coffee again with no problem.

Implementing the diet took me about a month.never been a label reader, for instance loved smoked almonds very healthy, after reading the label noticed coated with maltodextrin a big no no.Gluten free diets i have my doubts of how well it works for gerd or lpr because of allowing sugar, dairy, rice ,etc.I think the reason the scd diet works for reflux is eating easily digestible food therefore eliminating fermention in the stomach and gut .Love chocolate also will eat it again someday[lol].

We tend to think of grain products when we use the term complex cabohydrates. But fruits, veggies and nuts are actually complex carbs also and you can eat most of those food groups. So yes you can still get plenty of complex carbs with in the guide lines of the SCD diet. But grains for the most part are off limits.

I've been following the principles of the SCD for a little over 3 months now. I have read the book and also spent some time online at the various scd sites. You don't need the book, most of the information is well documented at the support sites for those following the scd. The guide lines of the diet are very simple to understand but they are also very restrictive. It is a huge change in diet for most people used to typical western diet. In a nutshell no grains, no processed food, no refined sugar or sugar products, no high starch veggies, and limited dairy. In my case I found that I basicly transitioned into a raw diet with the exeption of eggs, chicken, fish and some hard cheeses. It really isn't to bad once you change the way you feel about food. If you can't change the way you think of food you'll probably never be able to adjust to this type of eating IMO.

Oops, Red is right - it's not complex carbs we're cutting out...it's refined sugars, pastas, and the grains...the websites explain it best.

So I'll try to cut back on the chocolate, since that is the only refined sugar in my diet right now.

Cyberram - how long was it before you went off the PPIs? I just started those a few weeks ago.

Does anyone buy the almond flour in bulk? From Lucy's shop, or somewhere else? What about another nut flour, like walnut?
