I have a girlfried who has had acrylic nails for several years and all of a sudden one day when she was getting a fill she had itching around her fingernails. The itching went away after a few days but then the skin around her nails started pealing. She went back again for one more fill and the itching was so bad that she couldn't stand it and the pealing skin continued. She went and had the acrylic nails removed and now her real nails appear to have a slight yellow tint and the outer edges are discolored. Does anyone know if this is a fungus or a severe reaction to acrylic?

Allergic reaction does not happen overnight, but only after years of repeated and prolonged skin contact to an allergen; in this case, the acrylic products. Since all artificial nail products are made from the same family of acrylates, it she is allergic to one, she will be allergic to all of them. She was right in having them removed.

As for the discoloration, if it is a fungal infection, the nail plate will be separated from the nail bed and there will be apparent debris in the area of separation. The portion of the sidewall that seems to have pulled away is more than likely part of the allergic reaction. As long as she does not have nails reapplied, the portion that separated at the side will grow forward as the new nail plate emerges from under the proximal nail fold (cuticle area).
