Hi Kia and welcome!

It has been my experience that you may have to just keep trying different remedies until you find something that works for you.

A lot of people use Amitriptyline (Elavil) which is an anti-depressant but used at a low dosage helps with sleep and pain. It didn't work for me. Ambien is also good but still didn't do enough for me. I now just rely on my Xanax and Cal-Max which is a supplement of Calciu, Magnesium and Vitamin C. I still wake up most nights though, but I feel like the time I am alseep is good sleep if you know what I mean. I also tried Tranzadone, but man I couldn't even get awake the next do and I have way too much to do to feel that way.

Talk to your doctor and ask him to prescribe something. If it doesn't work, ask for something else. You just gotta keep trying until you find something that works for YOU.

Good luck.

Chin up! (May not help you sleep, but it'll make you feel better).

Kia, I don't think a waterbed would be good for you; it doesn't provide your back with any support...stick to a good, comfortable, firm mattress...get one of those "egg crate" foam things (I don't know what they're called) to put on top of the mattress, they provide extra cushioning and comfort.

As for medications, Elavil didn't work for me either...I'm now on Effexor XR, which seems to be working for me. You often have to just keep trying different medications that your dr. prescribes...different people react differently to the same meds. Good luck!

Hi guys, a firm mattress almost killed me. I replace mine with a semi-firm one. I had to have enough "give" to conform to my hip and waist or my hip would kill me during the night. Other than that, I have gotten relief with Elavil in the past but nothing has helped much with my sleep over the past 5 years. Of course, I did have an underlying medical problem and recently had surgery.I'm very curious to see if my sleep improves over time, right now I'm waking up frequently from the surgical pain so its hard to tell.

I've found that many of the natural sleep aids work really well - Valerian and melatonin work best for me. You have to play with dosage to get enough to help sleep without enhancinbg the fibro fog. Ihave found however that I like these better than antidepressants. But, as always , you have toi find what works for you. The nice thing is that these are readily available in many forms from most health food stores and many grocery stores. Good luck!

OH, HEY NOW, WAIT UP THERE HOMIES...

I HAD to go out and buy a waterbed. The kind with a comfort top matress!! If I didn't have my waterbed, I would have gave up a LONG time ago... Go and check em out. My husband went out and bought me mine for $1200.00. We had to make payments on it, but OMG it was worth it. You can get them money-back deals and such. Best thing to do is try one for a month and decide then. I was 70% better with my upper back, shoulders, and neck pain (bad posturing)after the second night on mine. Those pains, I haven't had since, unless I sleep on the couch or in a regular bed more than a couple of days. Dig that!!

As far as the sleep aides, I hate em all. I do like Kava Kava though. It's natural and it works for me and lots of people. I saw Kava Kava on 60 minutes or one of those shows about 3-4 years ago. It was the new "legal" drug craze. They almost made it by prescription only due to college campus abuse. These people were talking about how relaxed and totally chilled out it made them feel.

I just laughed at them and turned the channel as I usually do when I hear crap. One day, I went to a store that was going out of business, a K-mart I think, anyway, every thing was like 90% off. Wow, I thought, and rushed right down there. Anyway, to my sadness, every thing was gone but a raggedy little shelf with some dumb ol vitamins on it. I was determined to get something for 90% off dang-it and I did too.

I bought all kinds of bottles of healthy stuff for like 10 cents and 25 cents a piece. Among the many bottles was some Kava Kava. I was like hmmmm, Okay and pitched it up in the cabinet with the rest of my pharmacy. One day I had bad cramps and PMS and not even an aspirin in the house and it was 2am and my husband had the car at work. I broke down and took the "stupid Kava Kava" ha Ha.. Man I was so relaxed and limber, I slept like a baby. I take it still sometimes and it's 3 years later.

Try it if you haven't, I think you'll be surprised. Take extra for sleep though. It won't hurt you..

Lisa

Ps.. I almost forgot, I took Flexaril and still do sometimes, when I'm really desperate. I say desperate because although it helps with some things for me, it keeps me awake after the first 2-3 pills. I thought maybe it could be doing that to you too, especially if you take it in the morn! It was like the end of its course, at night, was when it just lingered in me and aggitated me or something. Ick.. I hate that!!

Hey it is me Kia,
thank you everyone for your thoughtfull advise! I will talk to my doc when I see him in july. I am at my wits end I know that I just have to find what works for me. I really do not like the idea of taking medicine all the time. The first time I took flexeril I selpt like a baby but after that it was the same old routine but it must be doing something because I feel much better
during the day after my grogginess wares off. maybe I will try the waterbed last night i tried an air mattress and all it did was make my night worse, so tonight it is back to the big bed for me I will keep my fingers crossed!
thanks everyone I will keep checking the board if anyone thinks of anything else.
I wish you all well!

Kia, a magnetic mattress has worked wonders for me. Gets me into the REM sleep. I tried Elavil and it made me groggy in the mornings. I feel so much better not.

I take 10mg of Doxepin to keep me asleep and I also take .25 mg of Klonopin to make me fall asleep. I haven't noticed any side effects but I do have to take them or I can tell a difference in my sleep (I don't :O)) I for one, don't mind taking drugs as long as my dr is monitoring them and they help !!
good luck !

Hi Kia,

Just wanted to say hello and I hope you have found a way to get some sleep.. I have battled that problem since I was a small child. My mind just thinks and thinks and thinks. Even if I kill the pain, I just lay there and contemplate my whole future. It really bites, but I have really come up with some good ideas over the years. Ha Ha

You might just end up like me and have to get used to lack of sleep. It is possible to do.. I just hope that you cover all your bases. There is surley something good for you that will help.. let me know how your doing... Oh another thing, I have been on Vioxx for a month now. My hip pain is what bothered me most in bed, even my waterbed. It's virtually gone since then. It has helped PMS and the actual cramps from hell too.. I'm a little leery as to how long I'll get away with taking it before my stomach rejects it, but so far it's working. For the hip and knee pain and stuff anyway..

It's non-narcotic, so you shouldn't have problems getting it. I mean, if your hips hurt like mine does when I lay, I bet it's the same problem I have. Who knows? You can always ask for a sample right?

Regardless, I am still praying for you!!

Thank you for your suggestions and your support I will let you know if I find something that works for me. I have tried tylenol pm and melatonin but they seem to give me night mares(yuk!) maybe i will try the tylenol again tonight. I go back to the rheume. on july 9th. I will talk to him about my concerns he is actually my 5th doctor in the course of about 2 years it is my secound rheume. It seems I started out as being anemic and having fatigue and
restless legg talk about something that can drive you crazy. anyway I was also diagnosed with a form of skin lupus but I also have blood tests that could point to SLE also a positive ANA but the doctor believes it may be fybro because I have trigger points also my sister has fybro. My younger brother had lupus really bad so the drs are just trying to rule things out by takng care of one symptom at a time first the amemia and now that my iron level is more normal we move on to more blood tests. So I will find out more when i go back. Thank you again for listening an good luck to you also let me know how you are doing
