Has anybody tried trazodone to help with sleep? I am on Elavil but am suffering too much with the hangover effect which sometimes lasts all day! As I work full time I need something that will wear off sooner. I tried Prozac and had very unrefreshing sleep on that so I am reluctant to try the newer ssri's.
Please help as I am desperate and also in a country where not much is known about FM / no support groups etc.

Hi gnasher, yep, i tried Elavil, too, and HATED the hangover (it made me such a B----!), plus I gained 30 lbs with it! I use trazadone and wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING! Man, I have the most refreshing sleep, no more weight gain, and the dreams are AWESOME!
hope this helps, good luck!

I'm with Copper...I've been using Trazadone for yrs and doubt if I would be sleeping very well without it. It's a very safe drug as well according to my shrink who knows nearly everything(well, almost.). Sleep tight, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Al

Hi
Thanks very much. I tried Trazodone for the first time 2 nights ago. It did definitely help with the sleep although there was a slight hangover effect, but not as bad as the Elavil. However what bothered me was that my sinuses were very clogged up and I had HUGE bags under my eyes. Is this just me or did you have those effects initially?
Thanks again!

I also used the Elavil (they think it is a miracle drug along with Ultram) and did nothing but gain weight as well.
I take Zanaflex to help me sleep and with it being part flexiril it has helped with the morning pain in my legs some also.
I have never tried Trazodone, will have to check up on it.

Hi Gnasher: sometimes side effects go away after you have used the med for awhile. I have a minor problem with dry mouth perhaps from Traz, so I suck on this silly looking sugarless candy and drink lots of H2O. In any case, give it adequate time to balance out benefit vs. side effects. Al

Hello Al, my friend. Hope you're feeling okay today! Just wanted to put my two cents in. The trazadone bummed me out big time. I know the side effects go away and my doc told me to give it time, but I had a job and a two-year-old to take care of. I was so drowsy, I couldn't DO what I had to DO. So, I guess it depends on what you have you have to do while your body is adjusting and how it affects YOU. Everyone is different. I hear it's a really good med after you get past the side effects. I needed a week or so without obligations, I guess. Not gonna happen anytime soon.
Gnasher, I hope it works for you. If not, keep trying till you find something that does.
Good luck to you. Chin up and keep smiling!

To Copper: I'm not sure whether it's aspartame or sorbitol or some other miracle sweetener. I just don't want any cavities from that evil sugar :) Why you should ask, my noble friend? Arizona Al(living proof that even when your brains are fried in the heat you can still communicate, however inane your post might be).
