I think I may finally have help for my chronic constipation. Since Zelnorm was taken off the market, the new thing is called Amitiza. The doctor who did my colonoscopy gave me this to try. So far it has helped. Anyone else try this?

Well it's been a week and I think I spoke too soon. It helped a little the first two days then nothing. I now have 5 days of build up. I am so frustrated and upset. I even took two laxitives last night and still nothing this a.m. I could just cry. The doctor says it's just my bowels as the colonoscopy showed nothing wrong. There has to be a medical reason for this. I certainly can't go on with the constant bloating, abdominal pain and gas build up for much longer. It's ruining my life and making me depressed. There has to be something logical explanation........

I really feel your pain. While I have not taken Amitiza, I did spend some time online reading about this drug and it seems your experience is not unique. For myself, I had a similar response with Zelnorm, although I would not say it was ever a successful mediciation for me as it caused so much cramping and extreme D. But I did have such high hopes for it when it first hit the market.
For many of us with C, the bone crushing disappointment of realizing that the hopes we had with some med are dashed either because the treatment has stopped working or never worked at all can end up in terrible depression. I have been battling this myself for the last few months and often feel like I have completely run out of options. I have spent the last few weekends virtually housebound because of the unpredictability of this disorder. So much emotional, physical and psychological energy is devoted to dealing with the relentless pain and discomfort that I find myself exhausted at the end of the day.
I am calling a new naturopath this week to see if he has any suggestions or new ideas for my very chronic and painful IBS. I am always apprehensive about seeing someone new as I hate to get my hopes up. However, if I can just step back a bit from the emotional chaos a bit and look at this as an investigation of sorts, I might be able to entertain ideas or suggestions that I have not thought of before. For me, it's the constant disappointment that nothing seems to work that leads to depression.
You're not alone!

Thanks. I too have tried everything on the market. Zelnor didn't work for me and not surprisingly its now off the market. I am so mentally exhausted by this. It just can't be good carrying this stuff inside you for days on end.

Have you tried stool softeners? Those help me if I take 2 a night for 2 or 3 nights in a row. I hope you find some relief.

I don't know if you've considered this but I have gone for colon hydrotherapy treatments and have found them enormously helpful in dealing with the kind of C you are describing. I too ran the course with laxatives for years until they all but lost their effectiveness. After the doc dx a colon impaction, he recommended hydrotherapy and it really was the best thing I ever did for myself.
As with all things re: IBS, even this treatment won't "fix" you. But what it can do is "remind" the bowel, in a completely natural way, of what it is supposed to be doing. It naturally and gently stimulates peristalsis and over time, it can help someone with chronic C get back on track.

Are you talking about stool softeners being safe or colonics? I've read that stool softeners are fine to take on a regular basis. I've never had a colonic and don't know much about them.

No, I meant the stool softners. Thanks for the info. I will try this for awhile.
I have heard of hydrotherapy. I may try it. What have I got to lose.

I go to a licensed clinic where certified and licensed professionals administer the treatment. They have the state of the art equipment and the knowledge required to use this procedure safely and effectively.
I was going to provide a link for info but apparently that is not allowed on these boards.
You can search colon hydrotherapy to find clinics in your area.
Highly recommend!;)

Yes, I hear you on that clasact however, since my doc prescibed it, I thought he must think it is OK. And besides what's the alternative? I personally wonder how good it is to have feces laying in your intestines for long periods of time...not to be gross or anything.
I am sorry I can't remember exactly how long it took to take effect but knowing how I am, I probably didn't give it more than 2-3 days. I take one capful EVERY morning. It is very gentle on my digestive system. NO cramping like I have experienced with other laxatives.

I bought some a few weeks ago and haven't tried it yet. Since the fiber drinks make me feel worse, I think I'll try the Miralax or start taking stool softeners again. Glad to hear the Miralax is working well for you.

I spoke to a specialist about it staying in your digestive track for a long time and can it hurt you. He said no....however, I still don't buy it. I have also spoken to him and other doctors and they all concur that some people just don't have a good working digestive track. For me this has been life long and they is just how it is. It has been increasingly worse as I get older. With all that said, it's painful, stressful and mentally exhausting to anyone who suffers and no matter what the docs say, they just don't know what we are going through.
If the docusoft doesn't work, I will try the miralax again for a few days. At this point, I will keep trying until I get some relief. I hope its soon though, I ain't getting any younger. I am glad I can share this with others who know what I am going through.
One last thing, I think this problem is also causing other issues like acid reflux. Another thing to think about.

I feel your pain..I was doing well at first with fiber bars and miralax..but now I am back to going every eight days or so..I am soooo bloated and frustrated. Also I don't seem to go very much when I do go..Where is all of this going? Does it get reabsorbed in body or what? I am not able to lose weight and am starting to think because I never have much come out when I acutally do go!!

No, it does not get reabsorbed. It can become impacted. This is what happened to me a few years ago. I would have very small insufficient movements every day and thought that I should just be happy something was evacuating my system. But the fact is, if you don't go enough, it will stay in your colon and this only makes it more difficult to have future BM's. It's complicated enough for the bowel to work when it's relatively empty. When it's full, it becomes very hard and painful.
For all those suffering with this type of chronic C, I highly recommend the colon hydrotherapy. It really can do wonders for the whole body, including the other digestive issues like acid reflux.

I had a culture done on my stool. It came out positive for blood. Doctor wants me to have another colonoscopy to rule out an abstruction or cancer. I had the test done 3 years ago because of Chronci C and nothing showed up. I do have a hemoroid so I think that is where the blood is coming from. Since I have had chronic c for most of my life, I don't feel the need to panic. I'm not sure I want to have the colonoscopy again for nothing. Also, the out of pocket expense is also very high as my insurance is not great. Since I have had this problem most of my life, if I had cancer I would be gone by now. Am I crazy not to do it or what? I think the doc just wants to cover his basis.

You are crazy not to do it.
Do it. Blood in the stool, if that is what he is diagnosing, is different from blood of hemmoroids. Generally, doctors can tell the difference. And if he suspects andobstruction could be the culprit, you definately need to know.
Do it. You will feel so much better after you have conclusive results.

I just found something out worth mentioning.
For years I have had chronic IBS and for years I have experienced numbness, pain in my left size of stomach and pain going up and down my leg. I have spent hundreds of dollars for therapy, chiropractors, etc to fix what I thought was a pinched nerve to no avail. Now I realize that my chronic IBS has been pinching on a nerve and causing all these problems. When I mentioned it to the nurse, she says of course this is the reason. I hope that my 2nd colonoscopy will at least help to find out what is going on, whether it be good or bad news so that I can get back to my daily life.
Wish me luck.

Had my colonoscopy today and nothing showed up. I guess thats a good thing. However, now I am back to square one. He says to try MiraLax. He also wants me to get an upper GI done as the blood in my stool was not coming from my intenstinal track.
As for the numbness, he says that has nothing to do with IBS so now I have to see another doc for this problem. Phew....getting old sure is the pitts.

Hello,
I do not suffer from constipation....but I did. I have taken prescription drugs like you guys. I've tried everything and a few months ago, resigned to just taking Miralax twice a day everyday. And that did soften BM's but I still bled from hemprrhoids. I am very young for having to have a colonoscopy. And when I did....nothing. I was apparently "healthy". The doctor basically said I would just have to live with it. But as we all know on this post, constipation is extremely UNhealthy and causes all kinds of things in your liver, pancreas, blood, etc. It is very toxic.
I was eating a very high fiber diet, took healthy oils everyday, took probiotics and drank kefir everyday, took Miralax, did yoga poses that would supposedly help peristalsis, sat on the toilet at the same time everyday in a certain positions with my feet up on boxes as has been suggested, drank prune juice every night, stopped all caffeine and alcohol, drank 64 or more oz of water a day, added ground flaxseed to my food, ate lots of apples (the pectin acts as a gel in the colon and supposedly helps things slide out) and added more citrus to my diet. All of this WITH Miralax, barely helped....and I still had bleeding. I know your frustration.
I started taking Chlorella capsules. 3 in the morning and 3 at night. And for one week, I ate a big hearty green salad with my dinner (mostly spinach, some carrots and tomatoes sliced in). It worked and for 2 weeks now I have been going every morning and for the first time in my life I have the S-shape that Dr. Oz talks about on Oprah! I never thought I would get that. I don't eat the salads everyday anymore. It turns your BM's a little green, but who cares. I realized that 3 in the AM and 3 in the PM was too much for me. So I now take 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon when I remember. That seems to be a good number.
Chorella stimulates natural peristalsis. So if the transit time in your bowels is too slow, it is because the contractions are not present in order to push things along in a timely manner. Then the BM sits there and accumulates. Gets bigger and will not absorb enough water despite how much you drink. Chlorella heals the lining of the intestines as well. I don't know how it binds things so well. I guess because it moves things out faster. I used to be so scared every time I had to go to the bathroom. I had huge in diameter BM's that were very lumpy or sometimes just teeny tiny pebbly pieces.
Give it a try if you want something natural. The production of synthetic products really bothers me and the consumption of things that are synthetic would be the last thing I would try. I was so disappointed in having to take Miralax even though they think it is safe long term...they just don't think pregnant mothers should take it. I plan to get healthy enough to get pregnant this year and I have heard from MANY mothers that constipation comes along with the territory. I knew I needed to keep searching for something natural AND long term.
I would love to hear from others who have tried this to see how it affected them.
Thanks, Good luck guys. I know it really stinks. (no pun intended).

Thanks, Good luck guys. I know it really stinks. (no pun intended).

Do you have to take them every day? I'm going to try it.

I do take them every day. But I go days when I forget and then my BM's are a little harder, but nothing like they used to be. Then I might take one or two more the next day just to catch up.
Let us know how they work for you.

I went for an upper GI and a lower bowel series. Not sure what the outcome will be yet but they did find a phillips screw in my stomach. This showed up on the ex-ray. How's that for a shocker. Doc says this has nothing to do with my IBS. Now how did that get there?

How could you possibly ingest a screw and not know it?!?!?!
Well, Chlorella is actually good for helping rid the body of metals....so maybe that's just another reason to try it!;)

I have no clue how it got there. I think I would have know if I ate it.
The stuff they made me drink for the x-rays constipated me really bad. When I am cleaned out, I will then try the Chlorella on an ongoig basis to see if it works. I did take it for one day to see if that would help me go but it didn't I also took miralax for two days and still nothing so I had to take a fleet because my stomach was in so much turmoil. Good god, what the heck is wrong with me?
I still don't have an answer as to why I have a little blood in my stool or can't go. Could it be the screw causing these problems. They think its outside of my colon. Not sure at this point. I have to go for another x-ray monday to see if it's still there. If I don't get some answers soon, I'm going to get a second opinion.

Did they mention anything about peristalsis? I had to take the chlorella for a few days before noticing anything. I took the chlorella, ate a spinach salad every night and took miralx and then I was good. I stopped the mirlax and spinach but kept up the chlorella and have been doing okay since then. And it made the bleeding stop finally too when nothing else would. Even soft BMs from miralax still came with blood until I stated the chlorella.
If the blood is bright red then I think it is fairly close to the rectum. If it is darker than I think that means it is higher up.
If they just blame the whole thing on IBS, I would look into Colostrum. It can work very well on your intestines and colon to heal and strnegthen. If it is IBS, then there is some nervous system action that is deteriorating your intestinal walls. I took it in powder form for years and it really helped tremendously. That was when my symptoms were so bad I could not leave the house for school or for work. I am not quite that desperate now, so I don't think I need it. But it might be worth looking into.

There is no blood visable to the eye. The doc took stool samples and found it that way.
