Hi, i was on protonix for about a year. Helped alot with heartburn, however has not helped enough to keep the acid out of my throat. I now have LPR,and have been switched to nexium one time a day. I think i need a double dose, but dr doesnt want to put me on two a day. MountainReader 08-25-2007, 09:40 PM I was on Protonix for several years. It helped for a long time, then became less effective. I have also been on Prilosec and Nexium. For the last year and a half, I have been on Prevacid twice a day. So far, that is working for me. From what I have gathered from this board, everyone finds different things that work for them. I say give the Protonix a try for a while. I now have LPR,and have been switched to nexium one time a day. I think i need a double dose, but dr doesnt want to put me on two a day. I have been on Nexium for about 5 years. Started taking a single dose with fairly good success. Still had a few problems so my doc had ne take a daily double dose. Once in the morning and once at night. Seems to have improved thing alot but I still have regurg if I eat/drink too late and then lie flat. I would think that if you still have problems that adoubl dose would help. But I don't get paid for that endorsement or have a M.D. attached to my name either. Lynn8 08-29-2007, 01:38 PM I have been on Protonix for 4 yrs and stil has the acid reflux, only someday is better than the other. A couple of months ago I tried to reduce taking it, only took it when I need it, because I read that there is no study yet on long term side effects if taking PPI more than 3 yrs. Since I still get this acid reflux, now my doctor wanted to switch with Nexium, I got free samples but couldn't take them, so I am back taking Protonix again. Right now I take it everyday since my voice is hoarse for one month already. Don't know if this is from side effects of PPI or the acid reflux itself. I read that both can make our voice hoarse. Can't win. Now there is a new study that taking Zantax, Pepcid AC for a long time could cause Dementia, but no study yet on PPI. Daisy37 08-30-2007, 12:28 PM I've been on it a couple years - Nexium caused me to be a nervous wreck but the Protonix works. Ever so often I try to give it up, but after 3 or 4 days I'm miserable again. datgrlstef 09-01-2007, 02:43 PM I was on Protonix for 2 months, after Prevacid and Nexium stopped working. Then Protonix stopped working.. I think partly because of the Biaxin I'm on for Lyme Disease. So I switched to Aciphex.. but my stomach hurt much worse, so I decided to take Zantag and see if it does anything. I hate taking meds, but the pain is overwhelming at times. :( rich58 09-01-2007, 04:56 PM I take Nexium but my new insurance (our company changed providers) switched nexium for protonix. I had pretty good success on nexium but the protonix did not work for me at all. I found myself doubling and then tripling my dose and when that didn't work I ended up paying for the nexium myself, $160 for one months supply, yikes! sammyo1 09-02-2007, 10:38 AM I have been on Nexium for about 5 years. But I don't get paid for that endorsement or have a M.D. attached to my name either. I have the same problem, took it all, no matter what if I take (was on 2 doses of nexium & at one time protonix) still had problems if I ate at night & laid down, gastro. told me noone should eat or drink after 6:00 pm, hard to do. He said worst thing you can do, I have had major pain & problems @ night from not listening, took me forever to get use to not eating late, that is when I get hungry. I am getting better @ using self control. Of course some nights I just can't help it, so I try to make it something like crackers... I always need my water. Great know dementia to worry about, only 42 & can't remember as it is. I am slowly trying natural products to see if I can one day stop the meds, who knows if it will work , but hey what have I got to loose by trying. Sammy shelovescliche 09-10-2007, 12:43 PM I've been on protonix for several years now. I started off on prevacid OTC when I was first diagnosed, but then had to move to some others, including Nexium, which didn't last long. I kept going up to the maximum dose with little to no effect, and it was awful. I used to have the regurgitation/heartburn/nausea/sore throat all the time. When they put me on protonix, though, it was a major difference. Since going on it, I've had virtually no symptoms at all from the GERD--just minor heartburn every now and then. Granted, I'm on the maximum dose, 40 mg twice a day, but it's still worked wonders for me. |
