Hello to fellow Fibromyalgians!!
I was told yesterday by a Rheumotologist that I have a classic story-book case of Fibro. I'm so sad...even though I had a feeling that is what I was going to be told, it still hurt. I found your message board while doing some research and saved it since I thought I would need you guys soon. HELP! The Dr. told me there is pretty much nothing for me to take that will help...He gave me Trazodone and I took my 1st one last night. I slept for 10 hrs. but still woke up 3 times during my sleep. I had already been on vicodin for the pain, but he says he wants me to wean off of it because narcotics aren't good for fibro???? It actually helps me be able to get around first thing in the morning, as that is the very worst time for me. I'm going to sleep on the floor tonight to see if possibly we need a firmer mattress. It seems like all this started after we bought a new bed?? Anyway, the Dr. also said the anti-inflammatories won't help either. I told him that I could quit the pain killers if I didn't have the pain, but he said I have to change my attitude; that I will always have this pain. He was a nice guy, don't get me wrong, but there has to be something to take for the pain. I'm going to religiously walk & swim, change my diet, but it is hard to "live with" the pain. I have a low tolerance for pain anyway, it figures I would get a disease that there is nothing for relief. Any advice will be welcomed. I have got a ton of paperwork regarding this, so I know the basics. I hope you are all having some relief from your pain and thank you for listening. DMS

I have had FM for over 30 yrs. The past couple of years I have been taking 1500mg of relafin. I find it really helps the pain and stiffness.

I have FM. My daughter is being tested for lupus as well as other auto immune diseases. I keep wondering if it will be FM. She has the joint/muscle pain and stiffness. She finds though that cold really sets off her symptoms. Even going into an air conditioned room bothers her. I haven't had that symptom, I was wondering if anyone here has.
Thanks.

Roberta,

I'm new to FM, I've been diagnosed for almost 6 months now. I live in New England and this past winter was a major nightmare. The cold crippled me so badly I could barely walk or function. Since the summer has come, I've had some relief. I notice when the temperature drops below 65° or if I go into an air conditioned room my symptoms flare up major. The rain and humidty has also affected me this summer. There are also times when it can be 80° and if a cold breeze hits me, it sends aches through my entire body, including leaving me with goose bumps everywhere. I am very curious as to what this coming winter weather will bring me for symptoms.

Does anyone else experience this?

Hi all!

I was diagnosed in the cooler months this year. I'm in Texas, and this heat is really zapping what energy I have! It's awful. Yesterday I ran some errands and had to lay on the couch for 3 hours to charge my battery! I think weather is definately a trigger, because I was doing a lot better energy-wise.

Hi friend: if your rheumie told you that "narcotics" were not good for Fibro pain, he/she is full of crapola! You need another doc, no joke. A rheumie who has experience in treating Fibro definetly will prescribe pain meds as needed. I know: Vicodin has given me much relief as well as Ultram. Most of us need some med help and many of us will need it all our lives. These meds are safe and effective. God bless, Al

Hi Al,
Thanks for your note...I was starting to feel panicked on how I was going to get through a day or at least get up from bed in the morning (worse time for me) without some pain relievers. How should I confront something like this? Do I call the rheumie or see if my family dr. will be willing to keep prescribing until I can get some relief from my diet & exercise and anything else I can do to help myself? I am going to see Dr. St. Amand at the end of the month and if he has good success rates with putting people into remission, maybe I can be one of them too and then I can stay off the pain medicine. Can you offer some advice on what you would do in this situation? My darling husband says that I might just finally have to suck it up and learn to live with it (we had a row due to that one...HA!)but it seems too daunting for me...I'm not as strong mentally as he is to just live with it. Have a nice evening all, Deanna

Ha Ha...CRAPOLA AND THEN SOME... You go Allen!! They can make pain worse when you run out because you were getting so much relief on them.. as far as I am concerned there is no proof otherwise that it makes it worse..

Narcotics aren't GOOD for anybody if you abuse them, but they are made to treat pain. What kind of doctor is he to say that FM is any less miserable than any other painful illness? Does he have FM? Has he gotten worse on narcotics with his FM? Hell no, and even if he did, that's him and not you, or me, or Al or Mamanell or Rach or any of us..

Go find a real doctor who at least has the *&^%$'s to tell you he don't want to give you any more narcotics for fear of loosing his license or something if you get hooked on them, instead of lying to you to get out of it... I don't want to take Narcotics or any thing else for that matter, but I can't stay in horrid pain 24-7... Forget it... Until I figure out something else, I have to have relief in order to function and live my life.. One thing though, Mind Over Matter does help!! But it alone, won't cut it, at least not for me!!!

Go find another doctor please, before I find out where he is and slap him.. I get so mad at doctors that mark you off because your not dying!! Sorry if I sounded off too much..

DMS: my docs have been pretty cooperative in prescribing Ultram and Vicodin. You have a right to have your pain treated--it is as much a disease as your Fibro and just putting up with it can damage the peripheral nervous system plus provide hrs of free misery that are totally avoidable. I have 6-8 studies in my files of patients who take "opioids" for chronic pain and the per centage of those addicted is usually ca. 3% or less. Your doc ain't God(especially your Doc!)--if he won't provide you with the help you need, make an appt for a new one who is not paranoid about so-called narcotic meds. God bless, Al

Hi Deanna, you mentioned that you have a very low tolerance for pain...I do to. I learned to "live with the pain" of fms for almost 12 years, until after I hurt my lower back, and then my fms symptoms became worse...I wanted "my life back". Anti-inflammatories don't work for most people with fms. If you have a low tolerance for pain, before you try narcotics, you might want to ask a qualified dr. about Effexor XR...you could have low seratonin levels which mean that you'll feel pain more than most people. It's the only thing that's helped me...after 12 years of suffering, I am now almost pain free. Different meds. work for different people...I don't take any pain meds. at all now. Good luck...find a dr. who will listen and help you, not tell you to "live with the pain".
