View Full Version : acid and osteoporosis

I have heard that some of the meds taken to stop acid reflux end up causing deterioration of the bones. Does anyone know which of the many drugs are responsible for this? I would hate to get rid of my acid reflux at the expense of my bones! I am currently on OTC meds only, plus 'natural ' remedies which help to some extent ..
Thanks for your input.

Martha

I agree with with you and think it is a wise idea to try to solve the problem with diet and lifestyle changes first if possible. But I realize there are situations and cases where it is not possible to correct without using acid altering medications. There are also many cases where the problem doesn't seem to respond to any treatment!!!!!!! Any medications that lower the acid in your stomach could possibly increase your risk of osteoporosis. The PPIs are probably the biggest offender since they suppress the acid for a longer period of time. Many minerals require high levels of acid to be efficiently absorbed. Supplementing with Calcium citrate, Magnesium Citrate and vitamin D3should help ward off osteoporsis. It is also believe by many that Chelated Minerals are more easily absorbed. You might want to do a search for post by "Harry" he has posted a lot of good information on the topic of Chelated Minerals.
