My liver enzymes are mild elevated from more that 2 years (ALK, GPT, and some times the GGT. I have had all blood tests that you can image including hepatitis B, C HIV and I had ultrasound many times and all are normal.
I don't drink or overweigh
My doctor is asking for a biopsy
Do you think that the biopsy will help???
Please advise

Last month I had a really bad gallbladder attack. After being seen at the ER, I was told that it needed to be removed ASAP. So, I had surgery last Friday, Sept. 14.
Prior to surgery, my surgeon told me that my liver enzymes were very high. She said that the numbers were in the thousands, if that makes sense. She wanted to do an MRI at first but I have a morphine pump and a spinal cord stimulator implant, so this was not possible. She then tried to schedule a G.I. doctor to do a scope first so that he could check the duct area but this was not possible either.
So we stuck with her original plan to remove my gallbladder. Once she got in there things changed. She ended up doing a biopsy on my liver and I was sent home with a drain in the middle of my chest. The drain must stay in for 2-3 weeks to prevent infection. I guess the surgery took longer than normal because I was also losing blood. Now I am waiting to find out the results.
I'm 41 yrs old and I don't smoke or drink but I don't think that really matters because you can still have problems with your liver. Does anyone know why a biopsy is done when enzymes are messed up?........Regards, Marie

Your doctor is trying to figure out why so the next logical step would be to have the biopsy. Yes, I would have it done if only to rule out things. My mother had that done because of a spot that was seen on x-ray (she never drank or smoked and always ate right)The biopsy was negative for anything but I am glad she had it done so we could rule out that as the problem. Good luck.

I'm not a doctor, but I do know that most doctors wouldn't do a biopsy unless your enzymes where at 3x the normal level. Since yours as you said are only slightly elevated and your ultrasounds are normal, it may be nothing to worry about. You could consider a CT scan which is non-invasive and is very acurate in imaging the conditon of the liver. It is unuausl that your GGT is sometimes elevated since you don't drink. Although the ranges that are considered "normal" are not always normal for everybody. I think that's why doctors call what they do a "practice". Best to ya.

Just wondering what damage these high enzymes levels will do. Was a moderately heavy drunker and used recreational drugs alot in my 20's. Don't drink much now, maybe a night month but occasionaly fall off the wagon re party drugs. My lifestyle and people I know make this hard. Lost 1 and a half stone in 3 months since cutting down. Going for a weeks holiday with some girlfriends who like a drink. Can i get away with it for a week?
