my name is marco, ive been having issues for 5 monthss or so, i think more, of having a lot of saliva in my mouth, i used to be on zoloft, so i always thought it was the medication, since i overly produced saliva, i spit a lot, because if i swallow it too frequently, air will build up in my stomach, causing me to burp, so i developed a habit of constantly spitting. sometimes though, i dont get as much saliva in my mouth, i guess when i dont concentrate on it or something. i used to be on zoloft and recently got off of it cuz of anxiety, and i hear anxiety can be a cause of too much saliva, but im not really sure, i dont know if this is something serious or not, but its just been bugging, spitting isnt normal and getting that feeling of air in my stomach constantly is bothering me, burping is the thing that relieves it momentarily, but it comes back a minute later, so i have to burp again. right now im taking antibiotics, penycilin for a tooth infection and i gotta get a root canal for it. that and also prescribed pain killers to sooth the pain, maybe the tooth infection is another reason for my too much saliva.

sometimes my stomach will hurt if i swallow too much, its either that..or the antibiotics.

its just really bugging me why i constantly have to spit and burp.
i dont think its anything too serious, but, i just want to know if theres been anyone whos had something similar.

Yes, when I have severe heartburn I get hypersalivation and burp more. You burp more because of the hypsersalivation. You swallow more with more saliva cause you swallow air. The hypersalivation is likely because of acid reflux in a damaged esophagus.

You should see a GI specialist and get a endescopy done to see if you have an inflamed esophagus.

I agree with Halls. You are probably having reflux issues. What is your diet like? Are you overweight, smoke, or drink? Try taking some Prilosec, that may help.

eh i think its just a nervous disorder, right now though i have stomach cramps and pain ugh it sucks, but, it started since ive started to take Penicilin VK, antibiotic for my tooth infection, im assuming its that thats doing it to me, 2000mg a day, it sucks..

I'm right there with everyone! I have been posting on the OCD health board, thinking I might just be obsessive-compulsive. I "feel" like my mouth is sometimes producing more saliva, ever since I started having anxiety back in 2006, so I feel more aware of my swallowing, if that makes sense. Sometimes, though, my mouth will feel "sticky" and I'll have sort of "stringy" saliva. Sorry - I know that's a bit graphic and probably downright gross to say, but hey, we're on the health board trying to help each other out! : ) I do know that I have had horrible acid reflux since being under stress.
I belch a lot and I do actually feel stuff come back up my throat occasionally. I really think reflux or anxiety or both causes our bodies to do weird things. I think we do have more saliva, because the saliva is trying to neutralize the acid or something...or, it could somehow be related to the anxiety. I've also heard other stories about antibiotics causing hypersalivation. I definitely think a tooth infection could also be causing it for Marco. I'm trying to eat more yogurt, exercise and say my prayers for healing! Just curious, Marco - the Zoloft didn't help the problem? I personally couldn't tolerate Zoloft, but Zoloft is supposed to be good for anxiety and also is used to help treat OCD, since it's an SSRI.

you know, i had the exact same problems, when i swollowed the siliva my stomach hurted, ive currently been having heartburn problems, and i feel like my stomach acid makes me produce so much siliva, but i dont think tooth or stomach acid is the problem, am trying to not think of overproducing saliva, ive noticed that when i think of something else it goes away, its only when i think of siliva that i again start to produce so much saliva, so i would suggest u try not to think about it, just do something that involves thinking (that sounds stupid, everything involves thinking.) what i mean is something that keeps u busy, try it it will help ya, it did to me.

what a frustrating problem. it seems so many things come back to the stupid reflux. it affects asthma etc.

To dannic1... i noticed you mentioned eating yogurt. it is so hard to know what is ok to eat. when i told my doctor i was eating yogurt, he informed me yogurt is acidic!!
dang. i dont know whats left to eat, without having salad 24/7!
