I have posted questions here recently about my peeling nails. Well, I have also noticed a red "band" near the tip of each nail (except my thumbs???) Anyway, while looking for answers about my nails on line, I ran across a condition called "Terry's nails". The picture look exactly like my nails! Now I'm scared....I know diagnosing your self on the computer is a really dumb thing that can lead to unnecessary panic, but I'm almost certain this is what I have. Everything I have read says it can be due to aging, or a more serious illness including cancer, congestive heart failure, diabetes or liver disease. Liver disease runs in my family. My question to you is, have you had clients with this condition that turned out to be nothing but age. I'm in my 40's, so don't consider my self "older". I will be calling my doctor first thing Monday for an appointment, but I can't stop the nagging worry I'm feeling now. Can you tell me if you have had any experience with this? Is it common? I can't even tell you when it started...I think I've had the red bands for a long time and never thought anything about it. But they have gotten larger, at least 1/3 of my nail bed. Any information you can give me will be appreciated.

Please see your doctor or internist! Let me know what happens.

Well, I went to my regular doctor. He didn't know about Terry's nails, but was willing to look at the info I had copied. (I know doctors probably hate it when you bring something from the internet.) He agreed that it looked like my nails and wanted to find out what was causing it. He ordered complete blood work and sonagram (sp?) of the liver. The nurse called me with the results of the bloodwork and said everything fell in normal range. The sonagram is scheduled for the middle of Sept.

Here's the new twist. My nails are starting to "lift" off the redden area of the nail bed. It's hard to descride, but the white "free edge" had decended into that red band. Now I don't know what to think. My nails show no sign of an infection or fungus. I have an appointment with a dermatologist Monday. Maybe she will have some answers. I'll let you know
