Since Im new to this healthy weight loss thing, I have a question about how many calories I would need to lose weight. Im 5'9 and 180lbs. Under normal circumstance, I know it would be upwards of 1800-2000 is what my body needs and then around 1500 to lose. However, i hvae yo-yo dieted for the past 5 years, and really messed up my metabolism. In the past 5 years, I dont think i have ever eaten more than 1500/day and i have gained weight recently. So, taking that into consideration, is a 1200 cal diet with cardio 3 times a week a realistic plan to lose?

Thanks

Sure! It really depends on what your body needs :) I eat 1,200 calories/day and work out more than 3x's per week and am losing!

Not sure how old you are, but your Basal Metabolic Rate is probably around 1800 calories. That is how many calories you need to maintain if you are completely sedentary.

To lose weight 1400-1600 calories should work. If you are inactive, the lower number is better. If you say you are gaining with a 1500 calorie diet, something is wrong. In most similar cases, the food portions are actually larger and calorie consumption greater than the person realized.

How are you calculating the calories you consume? Do you weigh and measure your food? I recommend that you do.

I also recommend not taking in less than 1400 calories because your body will go into "starvation mode" and begin preserving fat cells. This will cause you to lose more muscle and water, which will result in a fast temporary weight reduction, but not a slow permanent loss of fat, which is what you ultimately want.

Good luck!

Thank you for the help.

Kris, do you do weights when you work out as well? I have been, but it was suggested to me that i mght lose faster if I just do the cardio and less weights. Im naturally very muscular, so I think lighter weights would be best.

Im also wondering if you would mind sharing how much you weighted before you started Meridia and how much now? Thanks :)

I eat about 1400-1500 but I do strenuous exercise 6 days a week so I need the extra calories. But I have lost quite a lot of weight.
