I have been struggling with restless leg syndrome terribly lately. It's to the point I can barely sleep anymore. I see my doctor in 2 weeks but is there anything anyone can suggest to cope with this? I had struggled with this a lot a couple of years ago and it seemed to go away but now that I am weaning myself off my fentanyl patch it's come back full fledge! I am going crazy.
Trying to stay strong! :D
Thank you!!

I have been struggling with restless legs syndrome really badly lately. I see my doctor in 2 weeks but does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this? I used to stuggle with this a couple of years ago but it seemed to resolve itself. Now that I am weaning myself off the Fentanyl patch its coming back full fledge and I can barely sleep.

hi jessie,
when mine is flaring up i take a short walk before bed time. for some reason exercise before sleep helps us fibro/rls kids sleep better. had a doc tell me this. tried it and it worked. simple solutions always blow my mind. i sure hope this helps you. have you tried neurontin for rls? i take that now and have for years. i have breakthru symptoms that are doable.
peace,

Thank you so much! I will try that. I think I was on that for a while a few years ago. I definitely will talk to my doc about going back on something. Thanks again!!

you are most welcome. anytime. i have tried other meds for rls and i always go back to neurontin. i take 4 pills at bedtime. you may require it during the day also. i tried that but found it did not seem to make any change for me.

 Hi Jess and Blue, I drink tonic water, it contains quinine and it helps, mind you it sounds like you two ladys have it worse than I, but thought I'd pop that bit of info in, just in case it may have helped. Take care hugs Snoozyowl;)

Hi,
I have RLS too. It showed up on my second sleep study. Did not even know I had it until 2 months ago. Then It hit me, kept me awake several hours, could not control it. I found relief taking requip. Before I started taking it I had to "discover" how many nights I had it. Im at least 20 times per month. RLS does get worse over time. It also goes into remission. Don't know how long in remission. I decided I needed to sleep. I made the decision to take requip.
May this be a help to you,
Diane (kutztown07)

How I can empathize! I don't know if this will help you, but you might try calcium (calcium lactate or calcium chelate form) @ 1,500 in divided doses after meals and at bedtime, along with magnesium at 1,000 mg daily. The calcium has a calming effect. Melatonin is a natural horman that promotes sound sleep. The dose is generally 1.5 mg daily taken 2 hours or less before bedtime. If this is not effective, gradually increase the dosage until an effective level is reached (up to 5 mg daily).
Another helpful vitamin is Vitamin B complex plus extra pantothenic acid at 50mg daily. Vitamin B helps to promote a restful state and pantothenic acid is good for reliving stress. Inositol at 100 mg daily at bedtime can enhance REM sleep.
Avoid alchohol, tobacco and caffine. In the evening, eat turkey, bananas, figs, dates, yogurt, milk, tuna, and whole grain crackers or nut butter. These foods are high in tryptophan which promotes sleep. Eating a grapefruit half at bedtime also helps.
It's worth a try!
Blessings,
Kirstee

None of you will believe this so do a search on it. It really works for RLS and leg cramps. (it's insane but just try it): put a bar of unwrapped soap , not Dove or Dial, underneath the bottom sheet near your legs. Please: humor me for one night. Change soap after 3 months. LOL !!

Diagnostic procedures for true RLS are conducted during a sleep study.
Also sleep apnea etc....both seem to be related to Fibromyalgia.
My results were 400 movements during 4hrs of sleep..RLS.
21 times I stopped breathing the longest being 1/2 minute.
Can't figure out why I am so sore and tired? Haha!

maebelle, my 86 yr old girlfriend was tortured with restless legs even when we spoke on the phone. She said the bar soap worked the first time for her. Have you tried it? She said RLS is painful. She also has fibromyalgia. SG

cymbalta has cured my rls. it was so painful my calves felt like they were going to burst. it also felt like electricity in my legs. I always wrapped them at night with ace bandages. I cant believe I dont have an ace bandage in every drawer in my house anymore lol. my life has turned around completely. my fibro was horrific with rls. It started when I was 22 yrs , stopped when i was 24/25 while pregnant and as soon as I stopped taking perc after my c-section I felt the ache, burn and then the twitching and tingling started. usually its worse with pregnancy, but fibro loves pregnancy. It was so hard nursing my baby. to make my life easier at night or early morning i would nurse in bed, but my legs would be screaming. So i went back to bandaging up. I was able to get on meds a yr later because i nursed for so long. Fibro is also not as bad when you are lactating. Its those hormones.
i recommend cymbalta to everyone. It has also helped me come to terms with my diagnosis. I have fibromyalgia, but i have 2 arms, 2 legs that work. I have a beautiful daughter, a wonderful husband and a roof over my head. I am thankful. And thank god for my doc who doesnt let me suffer

Question - what kind of soap do you use in bed for your RLS? I tried one and removed it after a week of doing nothing except making my sheets scented. I think I used Irish Spring which is what I use in my shower. Was just curious since it did not help me. Maybe I used the wrong soap???????

I am so happy to say I have come a long way since I posted this originally. I was prescribed Mirapex and what a difference! I appreciate everyone's help. I have also noticed if there are any residual feelings it is resolved by drinking chamomile tea. Again thanks to everyone!! :D
Relieved,

My husband has suffered with RLS long before it had a name. He tried so many different "remedies" that by the time Requip came along he was past desperate. It raised his blood pressure and did not help alleviate the RLS.
It was quite by accident I noticed that whenever he ate sugary items his RLS was worse. He has since cut back his sugar intake and for the first time in his 65 years his RLS has stopped, at least enough to get some sleep. He is so happy, he has cut out as many sugar items as he can find.(This man loves sweets) With each elimination his RLS fades a little more.
I hope this helps others. It is such a simple, safe remedy, well, simple if it is easy for you to give up sugar. Try cutting back and see if it helps.

Hyland's homeopathic sells a sublingual called RESTFUL LEGS that works well, also. Cheap.
