K. I've had it. I know many people who lost weight on the Atkins diet and I'm going to do it. Just got back from grocery, stocked up on stage one approved foods and had my first meal.
Reviewing the list of Atkins approved food, I like it and can see myself eating like this for life especially if I lose the weight, gain the energy and in general feel well. I have at least 47 pounds to lose. 67 would make me even happier.
Does anyone has experiences with Atkins to share? How much did you lose during induction? Did you stay on induction longer than 14 days? Any tips?
I'm looking for support, encouragement and maybe someone(s) that is or has done the atkins to share experiences. No debunkers please. I feel I have thoroughly researched Atkins and I'm moving forward! Thanks all.

hi,
I suggest buy Dr Atkins Book, theres 3 books out so buy the latest, its probably better to go by that than do what others say.
this is a much controversal diet, its your choice.
I personally don't think its a safe way.

Hi,
Good luck on your diet!! I didn't do the Atkins diet persay but I did go on a very low carb diet (it was really low, but I still allowed myself some carbs). In 5 months I lost about 45 pounds (it originally was about 60 but I've gained some of it back... but I'm back on the diet again!) I also went to the gym when I could.
Hmm tips... well, I could be wrong, but a lot of the times when products like candy or something say "3 net carbs!" it's not actually true. It'll say I dunno, 25 carbs or something but 22 of those are sugar alcohol... I don't know how true that is that you can just deduct it. My mom is diabetic and she did learn that you could deduct the fiber, but she always told me it was 1 carb for every 3 grams of dietary fiber, and she never learned that you could take off for sugar alcohol. But, I could be wrong, because we could just be uninformed, but I usually don't trust stuff like that anyways because who knows if you can really subtract them, and if you are going to eat 25 carbs you might as well eat something that tastes better! Lol. But again, I could be wrong! I like sugar free jello with whipped cream as a snack, that's like no carbs at all... =) Good luck!

I have lost 19lbs in the past 5 weeks doing my version of atkins... more of general low carb since i try to stay around 20 net grams of carbs per day, but don't adhere strictly to the list of induction foods... I like to have some berries and nuts too, and haven't had a problem with stalling.

Good luck! I think the trickiest part of Atkins is getting used to not eating carbs, but it does become easier as you get used to it. I think the first week is the hardest! It is a controversial diet and some of the foods aren't the best for your heart.... but that is because you are allowed to eat certain fattening meats that aren't the best for you. To make it even healthier, stick with lean meats!

You should go out and buy one of the Atkins books. It's interesting reading and keeps you on track. I lost 35 pounds on Atkins and it was an easy diet to follow. I had a tough first two weeks but it's your body adjusting to NO CARBS. I did stay on the induction diet and every once in awhile would allow myself something special. The weight practically fell off. The nice thing was that no matter where I went out to eat I could stick with my diet and not feel deprived. Even McDonald's has delicious salads (smothered in ranch dressing). How can you feel deprived by that? Whenever my jeans start to feel tight I go back on it for a few weeks and get back to my normal weight. I'm 51 years old, have a slow metabolism (I didn't exercise on this diet either but have a busy job) and couldn't lose weight no matter what I tried. I'd been a size 14 forever and now wear a size 6. It's hard finding clothes in a size 6 for a 51 year old woman but welcome the challenge. It's so nice to put on something and not feel fat. To finally want to go out and be around people and feel good about yourself. As long as you are running ketones, you know your body is using up your fat. Good luck....and happy eating--Kate

Thanks all. ;)
I have a copy of the book that details the atkins diet in scientific terms and it does help knowing what is going on with your body so you know how important it is to do this and not do that. I always seem to remain motivated as long as I understand details of what I am doing.
Sugar and carbs have always had an ill effect on me. It just makes me sick. Bleh. I see myself staying on the atkins diet for life,..or some variation of a low carb diet,.. because the elimination of a high carb diet makes me feel healthy. I like the foods that are atkins friendly and think I will do well on atkins for life. I know I will have birthday cake and other yucky stuff from time to time but i will pay for it afterward by feeling sick within 20 minutes and wanting to pass out. I have been that way my whole life. I know this sounds like diabetes but I have tested negative for it several times. I am, however, hypoglycemic so this is a lifestyle change for me not just about weight loss.
Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Any idea on how a vegetarian can follow the atkins' diet?

A person who eats a modified ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, which includes eggs and cheese, may be able to do it, but it would be impossible for a vegan since a pure vegan diet can never be low enough in carbohydrates.
There is a lot of info on the www about how to do this diet as a vegetarian. The induction phase (14 days) will probably be veeeeery boring, but hey,...it's still possible to do it!

I would recommend you use the Atkins book, 2002 or prior. The newer Atkins publications and website are all about making money and selling products. So they can't be trusted.
There are some wonderful forums out there with loads of low-carb recipes and lots of tips and support. I highly recommend finding one.
I lost over 60 lbs. the first time I did Atkins, but kinda slacked off over the years. So I'm starting over on it with lots of exercise. So far so good!
Oh, and about sugar alcohols, that's true that they can be a problem. For those that notice they "go right through", they're fairly safe. But for those who have no digestive problems from them, that generally means you are digesting them. So those need to be counted.
