my doc told me today that he wanted to start me on injections of b12 at the rate of 1 per day for one week then 1 per week for a month, then once per month.
I fear needles and don't want to go this route. Has anyone been successful at sublingual therapy to correct low b12? Mine was at 262.
I did go out and buy sublingual methylcobalamin (5mg tablet - same as 5000mcg) and took one immediately under the tounge. Around 20 minutes later I did notice the mental fog kind of clear and did get a surge of energy that was comforting (not like taking a stimulant). I do feel different in a good way and I hope this is a sign of good things to come and that sublingual therapy will work.
any ideas?

Hi Jason. I have had great luck with the methylcobalamin under the tongue. I have been taking 1 methylcobalamin (1000 mcg) a day for one year under the tongue. On June 30, 2006 my B12 level was @ 240 pg/ml and one year later on June 29, 2007 my level is @ 818 pg/ml! Mine is not in tablet form though, it is a strip that just melts under/on your tongue, kinda like those breath freshening strips. As you can understand I am a big promoter of these. I'd also like to add that I stopped taking the strips 2 weeks before my blood test so I would get an accurate reading on my level. Good luck to you!

Are these strips OTC? I have heard they are the best form. Thanks! FLFLOWERGIRL:)

Thats so great that it brought up your b12 blood levels. This is great news. I would like to know how it worked on reducing your symptoms? Did it get rid of the bad things that go along with b12 deficiency? How long did it take?

Yes, they are OTC. I live in Ontario Canada and I just buy them at any local drugstore. I have heard they are a bit more difficult to find in the US though not impossible. Maybe your doc could direct you on where to find them. You could also get them on line. Do you have a B12 deficiency too? Although my levels are good now I continue to take the methylcobalamin under the tongue everyday. Since your body gets rid of whatever you don't need it can only be a good thing, right! I don't want to go back to feeling the way I did when my levels were low!

Thank you for your reply, no my B-12 is on the high end of range but maybe that is low for me. I don't know what I was before I got IDA. I will look around and ask about the strips. I want to at least give it a shot. It can't hurt anything. I had my B-12 tested again yesterday and I will see if it is going up due to my prenatal vitamins. How high do you keep your b-12? Thanks! I am also scared of having injections but my B-12 level had reached 101, I was having all kinds of symptons and had totally lost my appetite and not eating anything. So I had to take 2 injections of B-12 a week for a month. I was so scared the first time, alot of which had to do with my low B-12, that I felt like I was going to pass out. The nurse was so kind, but I really had to have the B-12 shot to get to any better. After the first shot I was felt so much better it's really had to describe how much better. Along with the shots I do take the sublingle B-12. I know's it's hard to face having a shot, believe me my first one was terrible, but if you have someone that can drive you to the dr. office and home I would say that it would be well worth having the shots as it gets the B-12 in your system much quicker and you will feel the effects of the shots the next day. As the shots are stronger in dose and will raise your levels faster then that allows the sublingle B-12 to maintain the levels.
Please try and talk yourself into having the shots are they are the quickest way to really get yourself back on track, my dr even said if I needed it he would prescribe me a nerve pill in order to get the shots, which might be another route for you to look at.
I hope you get better fast and let us know what you decide.
