My daughter is 1.5 old. She has never been constipated until this past week. Today makes two times this week she is struggling to go. It takes her half a day and she gets very tired. When she was first like this a few days ago we took her to the emergency room. She ended up going on her own there, but they suggested apple juice next time to help loosen her up. Since then she drinks apple juice everyday and I am frusterated because today is the very constipated again. What foods cause this, or what foods should she being staying away from? Does whole grain cereal cause this? She eats a variety of foods so I am puzzled on how to prevent this from happening again. She has always been more on the hard, that soft side when going to the bathroom but never actually constipated until this week. Help! (She drinks a lot of water too.)

Too much cheese always seem to be the culprit with our kids. The most common causes of constipation are a diet low in fiber or a diet high in fats, such as cheese, eggs, and meats.
Fiber is the part of fruits, vegetables, and grains that the body cannot digest. Soluble fiber dissolves easily in water and takes on a soft, gel-like texture in the intestines. Insoluble fiber passes through the intestines almost unchanged. The bulk and soft texture of fiber help prevent hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass. So her whole grain cereal could be causing it.
Has she had any medication recently? That too could change her system.
The apple juice should help. We would give our kids rasins......that REALLY worked. My friend used to give her daughter dried prunes and she loved them. That should really clean out her pipes.:D
Hope this is helpful.

DS is 3 yrs old and gets constipated with Apple juice. I sometimes give him Mylicon drops if he has not gone for 2 days and that helps him a lot.
I would give her more fruits and veggies to help her go and lots of water.

It puzzles me because she drinks a lot of water. She also eats a lot of fruit like pears, apples, mangos, apricots, strawberries, etc. She also eats whole grain cereals, corn, peanut butter and jelly on wheat, etc. I read peanut butter is great, she also does drink apple juice. She doesn't eat meat at all. She has also never had medication, and never been sick. It is just weird that she is constipated this past week. I am also a stay at home mom and I am the only one who feeds her so I know what she eats. I reduced her milk intake back a little and I skipped the yogurt. I also stopped giving her a piece of cheese as a snack, so we will see......? Thanks for the help.
