I am sorry your husband is going through this and I can imagine how worried you are. It does take some time for the system to kick in again after bowel surgery and takes longer for some than for others. My husband had a rough time too and had to have the nasogastric tube reinserted (not nice!),
but eventually it all started working again.
Can you not ask to speak to his doctors to find out what is going on? Do they come round at the same time each day and you could arrange to be there at that time? It might help if they could reassure you.
Keep us posted and make sure you are getting rest yourself as well as eating properly. I know it is hard but you need to keep up your strength.

Guggy: I am so sorry to read about your husband's slow recovery from surgury. Please know that often times it is common. My BIL was in the post of instensive care unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital in NYC for nearly 10 days before he was released to a private room. However, post op care was so poor, and his surgeon so admitted it, he was discharged on a Saturday morning and placed into an ambulance where he was transported to a hospital in New Jersey and admitted for 'malnurishment'. He stayed there for approximately 14 days. Thereupon, he had to be admitted to a convalecent hospital in order to learn how to walk and use his right arm. In total, he was hospitalized for nearly 10 weeks.
The lesson of this story is you must be your hubby's guardian angel and fight for his needs because he cannot carry the load right now! Confront the doctors and demand answers. If need be, consult other doctors and keeping hounding the medical profession for answers!
Oh, by the way, my BIL just this past July underwent surgury again to correct a plumbing error. During his initial surgury, the urology surgeon had disected and moved one of his 'pipes' in order for the colon surgeon to have more room to operate in (men's pelvic area is smaller than a woman's pelvic area). Turns out he didn't connect it properly, and as a result, encountered many fistulas and could not urinate properly for two years. He finally found a doctor who could treat this problem and surgery was successful and he is again up on his feet again. (He found this guy after having talked to one doctor who wanted to remove his kidney-- that makes sense to me!!)
Anyway, I tell this story not to scare you but to let you know other have been down this terrible road and do share your pain. Be a fighter and look out for your man! Good luck and keep us informed!
Best Wishes,

Hi my son had his resection in nov 05 to remove a mass that was blocking his colon had the same problem. My son was 23 years old when they found out he had colon cancer. To complicate things more he also has autisim. After he had his resection they had the ng tube in for 23 days. They tried removing it 3 different times and allowing him to have liquids and soft foods, but he would always vomit afterwards so they would have to put the tube back in. They kept doing ct scans and kept saying something about his small bowel loops. I felt so bad for him because he coulnt understand why we werent giving him food or water. He would beg me every day to please give him something because he was starving. He actually got up one day when we were out of the room and pulled his iv to the bathroom with him and got himself a drink of water. When I came back into the room I could hear him saying aaaah. I asked him if he had got up and got a drink and he smiled and said that he had. I finally got the doctors to let him have fluids because he couldnt handle it and they started to let him have 3 small juices a day. I dont know what difference it made because the tube would just suck it back up right after he drank it. My son would vomit up untill the day before we were discharged. the drs said that it just might take him a little longer to get back to normal. Well the day we went home I stopped by mcdonalds for him and got him a happy meal. He only ate half of the burger but he kept it down. I cant explain why but he never vomited from eating after we got him home.
