I was wondering if antibiotics help allergies in anyways? i've had a number of symptoms for a few years now and the only time they have completelty gone is when i have taken erythromycin for other reasons. My symptoms are range from stomach problems to blocked nose, Catarhh at the back of the throat constantly and Major fatigue/weakness/tiredness.
I'm trying to pinpoint my illness, so i can try to get better and this is one of the areas that i'm now looking.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :) :)

No, antibiotics are not useful with allergies. What sounds like what is going on with you is:

You have allergies that chronically inflame your sinuses causing sinus congestion, post nasal drip, and stomach upset. You probably always have a low level bacterial infection because of this. This low-level infection will cause further swelling and mucous buildup. When you start taking antibiotics, you are probably temporarily getting rid of the infection which then helps improve your symptoms.

I had a friend who spent all of allergy season on antibiotics.

Finally, he found a doctor who would target the allergies with a prescription nasal spray and a decongestant. Now he keeps himself relatively cleared up and no more need for the antibiotics.

Antibiotics won't help your allergies but they will clear up a sinus infection if you have one.

What color is your mucous when you blow your nose? Any face pain?

Thanks for the info.
I tried anti-histamine tablets for a few days last week and the congestion really cleared up. my stomach problems were still there though and these seem to be the worst symptoms along with constant fatigue. i'll try and get down the doctors this week and see if i can get an allergy test done.
My mucous is usually clear when i blow my nose, occasionally green. and i don't have any face pain.

Thanks again for your help!

Antiboitics main goal is as an antibacterial agent killing bacterial infections. However, antibiotics also have anti-inflammatory character and have been used in low doses to deal with chronic skin inflammation issues. I have a standing prescription that i take as needed when I have really bad skin flares due to thyroid, rosecea, exzyma, and allergic issues.

Sincerely,
MG

Hi there.
I too was on a long-term course of erythromycin in which i lived normally for about 2 years. I then stopped taking them and my allergies have absolutely sky-rocketed out-of-control.
I've made a seperate post of my own if you want the full story but as far as all of the specialists tell me the erythromycin only maskes the allergies, rather than actually helping you at all.
Hope this was helpful!

I have very similar symptoms...and a question as well....When allergy season comes i am prepared with allegra and nasal rinsing but i still get sinusitis.....and once i do its awful....i finally go and get antibiotics....this year i was on 3 different antibiotics as none of them really worked well.....Amoxicilllin/Zithromax and Doxycycline........i was on them for 5 weeks.....afterwards i had stomach problems - mostly nausea.....i ate plenty of yogurt but i am wondering if the stomach problems weren't because of the antibiotics - as they may eradicate not only the bad but the good bacteria as well......this has been a pattern 3yrs running now......has anyone else been on this sort of cycle and had these effects?

arihalli, I am not a pro at this allergy thing yet because I am new to all of this as of this year. However, I do have the same symptoms as well and have since July. NW Indiana was a terrible time for allergies this year as I am told by many people and doctors. I am going to see an allergist tomorrow to see if I can pinpoint my allergies because combined with anemia I have zero energy and am running on pure caffine. My GP gave me antibiotics twice due to two bouts of bronchitis in July and in August (he believes it is due to allergies) and even though I felt slightly better I think in the long run it actually made me worse. I was having terrible stomach issues and acid reflux bad enough I could not eat and lost 12 lbs in a month. I actually have it all under control now and have for the past 2 months with the help of enzymes and probiotics. On a previous post of mine someone had mentioned that antibiotics will make me feel worse and to try probiotics and it has actually made a world of difference for me. I hope this helpful!:)

I have been on Nanosex for 9 months now as I had sinus infection and went on to find out I have allergy to dogs, cats, trees, grass, PEANUTS, FISH and many more things, Well about a week ago I got what is like the flu and a real bad cold I am scared that I may need antibiotics as its feels like it may be a sinus thing going on!! I am scared that I may be allergic to antibiotics. I have inflammation of the duodenum so my stomach is already not good, what can I do to help this!! take care ...Mandy

Suzie, i am not a pro either.....but i have had the exact same thing for 3 yrs running....after 40yrs my allergies VISITED me again......i was blindsided as i didn't even KNOW what was occurring at first......after countless antibiotics i went to an allergist (who told me i am allergic to every single pollen)....the allergist said i had asthma - gave me inhaler, etc.......i started this year WELL AHEAD of the allergy season filling my body with antihistimines (allegra), nasal rinsing and was okay till mid september - and then pow....i got this sinus infection that led to the antibiotics.....the stomach/GERD/reflux problems were same as yours - i lost 13 lbs....for me i believe its caused by my allergy induced ASTHMA inflammation .....and when this occurs i just eat chicken soup/yogurt and jello - otherwise i get nausous...and even then sometimes it doesn't help........i went to an ENT guy and he said there was some NARROWING of nasal passage.....but surgery is only last resort.......it is now the end of november....the frost has killed all the mold/pollen and again i am finding relief......it will probably last till next September/Ragweed time here in upstate NY........at this point, due to cyclical nature of the s/symptoms associated with this problem I think i can conclude there is nothing i can do to end the misery of ALLERGY INDUCED SINUSITIS/ALLERGY...... i can try to alleviate the s/s by nasal rinse, antibiotics, nasocort, pulmicort inhalers - but short of locking myself into an airconditioned room for 3 months and someone shoving my meals under the door - there is nothing i can hope for but the allergies don't get worse each season.......
