Has anyone been exposed to mold spores and or yeast that you are aware of? I have just recently taken a one year leave of absence from work due to just being sick all the time. Two weeks after my leaving they finally decided to do a test on the indoor air quality. Findings were black mold, yeast, and other molds. I looked up black mold & Fibromyalgia on the web and found that Fibromyalgia can be caused or aggrevated by black mold.

Darlene:
I have read a lot about yeast/molds and that people with fibro are very sensitive to them. I just picked up the book, "The Yeast Connection." I can't believe the similarity in the symptoms for fibro. I am waiting for a response from my rheumie to see if he feels there is any substance in this. I DO KNOW I am very sensitive to being around mold and react to it. Although, skin tests do not show that I am. I was wondering if anyone has tried the yeast free diet and had any astonishing results from it. Black mold is extremely harmful to anyone, whether you be allergic or not. Have you found that you've had any improvement since leaving your workplace? Dawn2

If you have allergies to molds, it can definately make you sick. Sounds like a good time to get a lawyer. The yeast issue is really a sensitive one with MDs. Most do not believe it can cause a problem since we have all have yeasts in our GI tract. Some consider it quackery in the 1st degree. I went to an allergist who said I was allergic to yeast, but when I had an anti-yeast medicine-it didn't help my FM. My current insurance wouldn't even have covered it if I took it now.

Dawn2 - Well, I'm sorry to say that I really haven't noticed any improvement since I've been off work. In fact, I started keeping a daily diary and out of the number of work days I've been off there has been maybe 2 or 3 at the most that I felt I could have made it to work. I don't know if after you have been exposed for so long that you just don't recover right away or what. I'm trying to figure out what type of doctor I should be seeing for this, I don't feel my rheumotologist has a lot of knowledge regarding the problem. Any suggestions??

Darlene:
There is an address in the Yeast Connection book where to write for a list of doctors that deal with this condition specifically. You send 5.00 to The International Health Foundation, P.O. Box 3494, Jackson, TN 38303. They will at least send you the list of doctors in your area. Sounds by Rollercoaster tho, it may not be our answer. I'm still waiting to hear from my rheumie to see what he thinks. He is really up-to-date on fibo. I would have thought he would have mentioned it to me by now if he thought it worthwhile. If you are sensitive to molds, you need to make sure you clean the drainage pan from your fridge - the mold grows fast and sometimes you can't even see it. I clean it weekly cause everytime your fridge goes on, it spreads the molds everywhere. If you have a cellar, run a dehumidifier. Carpeting - the best thing is to remove it. Venting is important when cooking. These are some of things I've been working on. I also read that if you are sensitive to molds, you are more apt to react to dust also. It's true with me. I've started to remove all the carpeting in my house. It's been costly and it's put me in the poor house. I will say the rooms that I have removed the carpeting, I do feel better in those rooms. Keep in mind, I've never reacted to mold/dust on allergy tests. Hope this helps! I also react to a lot of chemical stuff. Have you noticed you react to newspaper print? Scented candles? (another perk from fibro) Dawn

Rollercoaster:
Thanks for the info. I've tried eating from that book (yeast connection) and I can't say I've noticed any difference. I do notice if I'm in a well filtered cooled building, i.e. certain medical facilities that I feel a lottttt better. Do you notice this? It's almost as if my whole body stops swelling and my muscles are like 80% improved. Just curious if any one else has noted this. Dawn

Dawn - Hi, I haven't noticed any reaction to newsprint, but I do get hives for no apparent reason at all. First time I got them I ended up in the ER because my tongue, lips & throat were swelling. I do think I have a lot of food allergies, but then again it could the the IBS, who knows. I'm glad you have such confidence to your rheumotologist, I can't say the same for mine in fact wish I could find a different one. His theory is that if I exercise I'll be just fine. Wish they would invent a "pain meter" so those of us who are in so much pain could show the doc's just how bad it is. If anyone out there knows of a good rheumotologist in the Portland Oregon area please let me know.
Thanks, Darlene

Darlene:
Usually if the tongue, lips, and throat swell, it's something that has come in contact with it. If you are allergic to any kind of ragweed, melons (especially cantelope and honeydew) can do this to you. Do you recall eating that before swelling? Also, some of your tea is ragweed related...starts with c....(can't recall the rest of it.) All of these are in the ragweed family. My daughter-in-law can't eat melons cause she starts to get swelling and itching in the throat and allergic to ragweed. I'm allergic to ragweed and the melons don't bother me. Go figure! I hope you can find someone else who will take your symptoms seriously. A rheumatologist or someone who knows fibro and is sympathatic to the pain. Have you looked into any pain management places? They are usually quite knowledgeable about fibro. I see a pain management group and they show you how to deal with the pain and I receive monthly trigger injections and IT has made a world a difference. I'm not saying I'm ready for a marathon, but I am able to be up and about more than what I originally was. I take no daytime meds either for pain. You keep looking, even if you go thru several docs. You've got to find the right one. Best to you. Don't give up, you've find the right one, it will help youhave a better quality life and you deserve it! Dawn2

Dawn2 - Hi, and thanks for the reply. As far as I know I didn't come into contact with anything that I'm allergic to. But, sometimes I break out in hives for no apparent reason so obviously it's something maybe in my environment that I'm reacting to. I did however find out that the building where I was working is full of pennicillium, a mold, and since I'm allergic to Penicillin I would think that could be what was causing me to be sick all the time at work. I believe the allergy from all the mold & yeast at work definitely played a large part in the severity of my FM. Anyway, I'm in the process of trying to file some disability claims and I just don't seem to have the energy or the ability to concentrate long enough to even get it started. Oh well, tomorrow's another day, right??

Darlene:
Good luck in your pursuit - how did the building have pennicillum in it? I know when I'm around the green mold outside - the moss for any length of time, I get dizzy and a wierd feeling. I also get asthmatic around dampness (cellar areas/seaweed on the beach), but I never reacted to mold on any tests. So the doc said I can't get allergy shots cause I have no antibodies. Did you test positive on your mold tests? Dawn2
