OK, I've been screened and even had a second opinion-both said I'm a good candidate. Surgeon is experienced and has a great reputation. Clinic seems very professional with latest equipment. He recommended "Intralase".

Can anyone share their experiences with Intralase? Better/worse/different than other techniques? Thanks!!

*I'm 30, have -4.5 & -4.0, slight astigmatism both eyes, contacts irritate my eyes, have to wear glasses-no dry eye with glasses

I'm 34, I had -4.50 in one eye and -4.25 in the other with astigmatism prior to Lasik. I just had custom wavefront w/ intralase on 8/30. I've never had any of the other procedures so I can't compare them but I can tell you that I'm very happy with the results. On the day after surgery, I had 20/25 in one eye and 20/30 in the other. I could read the 20/20 line when using both eyes. From everything I've been told and read, my vision will continue to improve over the next several months, but even if it doesn't, I would still be happy.

Thanks-your posts are very encouraging! Have you experienced any dry eyes?

Dry eye is a very normal side affect during the healing process. Some days are worse than others for me. For example, yesterday, I was using the lubricating drops about every 20 minutes but today I've only had to use them every 3-4 hours. From what I've read, the dry eye can last for several months so I'm stocking up on the drops.

I bet I'll have dry eyes afterwards for a little while-my eyes get dry with contacts to the point that I had to discontinue use. They are never dry with glasses (occasionally first thing in the morning). For those that have dry eyes after, did you have any dry eye before?

I have been battling dry eye and eye infections from contacts and the for the past 2 years which is the primary reason I decided to have Lasik. From what I've heard, most people do get dry eye during the healing process regardless of whether or not they had it prior to surgery.

Thank you for your response-it's nice to hear that someone else who had dry eye with contacts did Lasik. Some people (not my docs) have said I was crazy for considering Lasik since I had dry eye with contacts. I was worried it might make it a lot worse long-term.

When I wore contacts, they were very uncomfortable and my eyes felt really dry. When I wore glasses they were fine. I had Lasik about 10 months ago. I had bad dry eye for the first few weeks, and moderate dry eye for a few months after that. My eyes feel great now, and I only use drops once or twice a day. And my vision is 20/20! It was sooooo worth it!

I also just want to add that you should be prepared to spend an extra $100-$200 or so on eye drops over the next few months after Lasik if you do experience dry eye, as you have to use the preservative free drops and they are quite expensive. Your eye doctor might give you some, but even after they gave me a half dozen boxes it wasn't anywhere near enough. I was going through a half dozen vials a day the first few weeks after surgery. Just want to give you a heads up as it's a nice added expense that they don't tell you about! :-)

I recommend shopping for the lubricating drops on an online auction site. A 1-ounce bottle at the store was $16.99. I got (9) 1-ounce bottles on line for $39.99 :D

Thanks for your comments! Also, how blurry is blurry vision that immediately follows surgery. Will I be able to see the computer screen at work?? When did you guys return to work following Lasik? My surgery is on Wednesday and I plan to take leave until Monday-sound reasonable?

I work on a computer all day too. My vision wasn't blurry at all afterwards but I think I'm one of the few as far as that goes. I had surgery in the late afternoon last Thursday. My follow-up appointment was first thing Friday morning. By then, I had 20/25 in one eye, 20/30 in the other, and I could read the 20/20 line when using both eyes. I was back to work on Friday after my follow-up appt. My eyes are still sensitive to light and I sit under an A/C vent which is constantly blowing down on me which makes my dry eye worse so I am using the post-op glasses while I work. They help a lot!

I had my surgery on a Friday and went back to work on Monday. I had trouble seeing the computer for the first couple of weeks. I had to put my face up close to the screen at work, and I had to have my laptop on my lap instead of at my desk. After a couple of weeks my close up vision stabalized and it was not an issue. 5 days off from work should be sufficient. I would definately recommend at least one or two days off from work for anyone having the surgery.

DollBaby24,

You said after a couple of weeks your close-up vision stabalized...were you nearsighted or farsighted prior to surgery?

a couple of hundred dollars on artificial tears??? where the heck are you all shopping??? i went to target and walmart and bought the generic brand preservative free tears and they worked great! i liked the target brand better and they were more expensive, but it was definitely worth that extra whole dollar more! now i use refresh tears and only first thing in the morning right when i wake up. i have noticed that my eyes are getting less dry too, because i used to HAVE to use the tears first thing in the morning or i couldn't open my eyes, and now sometimes i forget to use them.... my eyes are still dry, but not so bad.... ANYWAY.... unless you actually really have money to burn, go generic....
