Anyone here ever worked in these capacities? I'd be interested in getting more information.

I have many years experience in ICU, PACU, and Psych. But, having been out of nursing for the last few years while living oversees, I find I have no desire to go back to patient care. I want a desk job!!!

Anyone?

Hi -

I have a friend, non-RN, who had worked for years as secretary at a day surgery center which gave her coding experience. Several years ago, she left that job to become a coder. The company she went to work for wanted her working from her home, set up a new computer in her home for her to use while coding and arranged for her to have reference programs and books too. She found it difficult to meet their standards for production and 100% perfection and so became frustrated. She had thought she could care for a child, do things around the house, and still meet the ever-increasing quota, but that was not so. She stuck with it, disciplined herself to consider that job as full time and did succeed. She's still not sure it's what she had in mind as a desk job at home.

Just recently I've found a desk job (I'm an RN) and will start next week as phone triage nurse (one of several) in a busy OB office. I saw the job advertised in the local newspaper and sent in my resume.

Good luck finding a job that suits you! Barbara

You can apply at Medical insurance companies...many nurses working there as auditors ....but Coding will require you to go for at least a year of specialized training for coding. RN background is very helpful but you still have to have a certificate in coding since that is like the income at the hospital/clinic...need to be good at knowing which diagnosis codes are paying and which are not. Lawyers also hire RN's to review cases so that is an area to look into. Good luck.
