My dad recently started to have smokey vision. he went to get his eye checked and they told him that there is something in his eye but they dont know what it is. These got to be some idiot eye doctors, or my dad has some new disease. Also when I look up pictures for cataract online I notice almost all pictures of peoples eyes with cataracts have a gray eye, can people have cataract without having this change of color?

By the time the cloudiness of a cataract is visible as gray in the pupil, the cataract is pretty advanced. So he could have the beginning of a cataract.
Really dry eyes can cause some clouding too.
But it sounds like you should talk to the eye doctor your father saw and find out what that "something" was in his eye. Sometimes our parents don't always get the story straight from the doctor.
