I was wondering what helps for most people that have OCD.. Does certain medicine work better for pure O OCD. I am taking Lexpro about 30mg a day.. It seems to help some days better than others and my anxiety has gone done quite a bit.. I still have the intrusive thoughts and sometimes my anxiety goes up when I am having a lot of bad intrusive thoughts.. I am in therapy now to help with my OCD.. I think allot of it is the mental rituals that I do that make it worse.. Just wondering if there is anything better for someone that has pure O..Thanks!!!!

I take lexapro 20mg. Also risperdal 0.5mg twice a day for anxiety mostly. It causes weight gain, but I've managed to stablize and it's worth it for the anxiety relief.

Hi there,
I have pure O also. I'm taking celexa 80mg and .5-1 mg of klonopin daily. I think both are helping with my ocd and anxiety. My dr. wants to give me anafranil also bec. it's very helpful for ocd but I'm scared of the side effects like weight gain and constipation! So she said that ok we'll wait and see how I'm progressing. I didn't gain weight with celexa and klonopin but when I took risperdal before, I gained weight! I hope this helps. You might want to talk to your doctor about anafranil bec. it's the first drug approved for treating ocd. Hope to hear how you're doing! Good luck!

I have never heard of one medicine being specifically recommended for pure O. All the SSRIs , plus Anafranil, are used for OCD - often it is a trial and error thing.
But I think it's good you're asking the question, because who knows, maybe we'll find that a lot of people with pure O did have luck with one particular med?:)
Personally I take Prozac and it has done wonders for my OCD.

Just curious - for those of you who are on medication or have been before and it helped tremendously, how did it help you? Does it make the thoughts and compulsions go away completely? I've heard before that it kind of "turns it down". Mine is a strange obsession/compulsion, as I'm aware of my swallowing. Sometimes I just "feel" like I need to swallow, but who knows, maybe it's just generalized anxiety. It does seem to get better when I can relax, definitely when I chew gum or when I'm super duper absorbed in my work. I had this silly problem in high school years ago and then it just went away on its own. Why it came back years later beats me, other than the fact that I had been in a long distance relationship at the time. I think stress triggered it back into my life. Some days are much better than others. Luckily work is SO busy, that sometimes I'm able to escape it some and make it go away. No one at work knows the mental anguish that I suffer, because on the surface, no one really notices. I hide it well, I guess. I've mentioned that I probably have OCD, but I've never gone into great detail. I noticed that I also brush my teeth a lot more than usual since this all started up again. Believe me, I pray daily to God to heal me of this annoying disorder. I know that God is merciful and hears my prayers and that He is able to heal.

It's kind of hard to describe how exactly the medicine works, but I'll try...;)
For me, one of the first things I noticed (if I remember right; that was 6 years ago) was that it was easier for me to just "wait it out", that is to say, I was able to tell myself, well, let's see, maybe it'll go away on its own.
And of course once you can do that, you are already following the probably most important rule of cognitive-behavioral therapy: Don't act on the obsession, wait until the anxiety goes down by itself - because it WILL: And if you could do that once, it will get easier and easier... because every time you resist a compulsion the OCD gets weaker. You'll remember next time that it worked the last time...
So partly I guess it makes it easier to not give in to a compulsion, which then by itself starts helping.
(I hope I am making sense?)
For me also, after I had not really been able to look outside the window in a moving vehicle for fear I would see somethign to obsess about, I suddenly (I remember the moment! I was sitting int he car with my parents and realized I was looking outside and the anxiety was gone!!) had the feeling that the streets had been cleaned of all the scary stuff, so to say!!
:) :) ;)
That was quite an experience!!!!!

Thanks for trying to explain it to me.
I'm having a really good night - feeling kind of like "normal" again, before
this all started up. I'm a strong woman of faith. : ) Miracles do happen.
