Would Tylenol damage a person's liver? If so, the why? I was under the assumption that asperin associated drugs did the damage. There is no asperin in Tylenol, right? For aprox 7 years I took 2 tylenol 3 x daily for pain. The following 6 yrs I took 3 tylenol 3x daily for pain & am 46 now. So that is 13 continuous years use of Tylenol 500 mg capsules. I thought I was too young for there to be anything really wrong with me...wrong. I didn't know it at the time but I was suffering from severe osteo , Rheumatoid & lupus. I just had a TKR 11 wks ago. Since a year ago I'm on prescribed pain medications. I feel like I have probably either damaged my liver with the Tylenol use or my Lupus has attacked my liver. In flares as with several autoimmune diseases Systemic Lupus attacks my own body, selecting joints, organs, ect. The Lupus has already did damage to my nervous system in the last year. My toes are very numb & sting, but I also have diabetes too.

I found out through a routine doctors visit yesterday with 2 urine tests that I have high bilirubin in my urin. In June it was not there. I had an Ultrasound this morning and it showed no blockages or strictures and my Gall Bladder is fine - no stones. I have a couple lg spots in my liver that's near the GB that the US tech said didn't look like tumors because of the border shape, But I do have a very enlarged fatty liver. My symtoms are fullness most the time and edema in my legs the last 2 wks, enlarged liver by US, and bilirubin in my urin. It sounds like after the Dr gets the report on this US back he will probably order a CT or MRI?, then possibly a liver byopsy?. It sounds like Cirrhosis to me, what do you think? I would appreciate anyone's thoughts! :)
Thanks so much

Don't go jumping to conclusions - k? Stay calm.:)

It does not sound like cirrhosis at this stage (my opinion). (I have stage 3 fibrosis ++). There are several stages of fibrosis before you get to cirrhosis, ok? I would insist on an Ultra-sound guided biopsy however.

Do you have a copy of your lab report? What are your other numbers - Alk Phos., Ast, Alt, Asma, ?

Does the Dr. have you on any meds. for the edema? The edema can also be caused by several other things - not that you need any more.

As to your original question:) - Tylenol has Aceteminophen and any "ophen" is not good for our livers. I found that out just recently myself. I would take 1500 Aceteminophen with 600 Ibuprohen for a migraine, quite frequently. My GI Dr. says :nono: So what to do?? When you HAVE to, do it. not much choice. But after the first week or so on my meds, I've been blessed with no major headaches, - don't know if the 2 are connected or not but I'm not going to question it.:)

Take care, hang in there, and I hope you keep us updated.

hEY THERE,

I am going through the same thing you are, after taking high doses of acetaminophen for about 2 yrs. My liver shows slight enlargement, and my enzymes were elevated.

Hopefully we'll both come out of this ok... it can be terrifying I know. Please write me back and let me know how you're doing. You are in my prayers.

My Hepatologist told me that I would have to have taken in excess of 4000 mg of Tylenol/Acetaminophen per day for it to have affected my liver. Just thought Id let you know that, he is a Liver Specialist.;)
