Hi,
my name is preston. i have spastic diplegia due to a preemie birth. i am 32 years old trying to get my license for the first time. i have 2 kids and now have a good job that i need to get to and from on my own. ive been through every obstacle to get my license and have been pushed in another direction every time. i had my permit and went to the dmv to take my behind the wheel test and when they saw the way i walked told me i was unable to take the test until i get an evaluation form filled out. so i took the form to my dr. and she told me she couldnt fill it out cause a neurologist needs to fill it out. well i am having a hard time finding a neurologist who accept medi-cal. i dont know where to look or what to ask or who to talk to about this matter. i would greatly appreciate any advice or info on this matter. i know how to drive i've owned cars before. i just need to be pointed in the right direction of where to start looking.

Preston,
My son just turned 17 and we also had a hard time, His regular doctor filled out the form you are refering to. It does not need to be a neuro. Do you have any doctors that see you? If so they can fill it out. After that we went 4 times to take the test and each time he failed, with no real reason why. Finally I demanded that a supervisor give him his test, he passed with no problems. Before I got the supervisor, many people suggested taking him to a near bye small town. They do driving test, sometimes only once or twice a week, but seem to be more sensitive. Let me know how it goes. My son uses no special equipment to drive although he does use a wheel chair in his daily life. He to has spastic dyplisia from a premature birth.
good luck Ryan's Mom!

I hope you get your license. I've been trying for a long time to find someone who is willing to teach me and give me another chance to try driving. Moneywise its hard but hopefully I will get my chance.

I do not have CP, but have worked for many years with people with disabilities. Here where I live there is a Rehab Center. Part of what they do is evaluate people in your position to determine if they are , in fact, able to drive..checking reflexes and other factors. They then help the person determine if they would need any adaptive equipment, or could be ok with regular controls. Do you have a place like this near you? It may help .
