I have a six year old daughter that we are having some concerns with. She is cutting everything with her scissors. Are answer was to take the scissors away. She will shred paper constantly if she doesnt have scissors to do it with. She has cut my pillows, clothing, pets, anything that she can get her hands on. In the evenings she will sit with paper and shred it in to bits and she wants to keep it all. Yesterday, the second week in school, I get a phone call from the teacher. She has cut up just about everything in her desk. The teacher caught her with her socks off cutting them up. I know what your thinking why didn't the teacher just take the scissors from her. We have hid ours at home but that doesnt stop her from shredding things. Can anyone give me any input on what this sounds like. She has an appointment with her pediatrician today but I would like some advice and questions to ask him before I do.
Thanks,
Kim

I expect the pediatrician will want to know if anything happened to her recently or if she saw something recently that deeply disturbed her. So you might want to ask her some gently probing questions before hand to try to determine if there's something going on.

She did experience something very disturbing about 4 yrs ago. I was wondering if that could be related. She witnessed an adult take a sword and beat a puppy with it. God I hope this is something we can work through with her.

Just like she would need physical therapy if she broke a leg, so might she need psychotherapy to get back on track.
I hope you feel free to post here for support, and I hope she can find resolution with a minimum amount of intervention, i.e. a few talking sessions.
