Hi everyone,
I was just told today by my doctor that I am diabetic. Just had a physical and part of it was a 12 hour fast blood test. My glucose reading was 138 and he said that anything over 124 was diabetes. A little overwhelmed with all the information I have to learn regarding this, a little nervous about having diabetes, and apprehensive about what's next. Looking forward to reading all the posts and learning as much as I can and hopefully being able to contibute soon.

Hi, I was diagnosed last week. I am 7.8 borderline, I am told. Already experiencing numbness in big toe. I am also hypothyroidism. I do not have any insurance so I have researching the internet in hopes of finding some help. I wish you well.

7.8 is not borderline. I would get a second opinion.

I agree with Blondy (again). If the 7.8 was fasting, it is definitely not borderline. Fasting should be below 5.6. The 7.8 is actually ok if you had just eaten 2 hours earlier, but that is just barely.

Hi Linda. While I am sorry to have to welcome you to our groups here, you have found a good place. Try not to be overwhelmed. There is a lot of information and it will take you a while to process it. Also keep in mind that what may be true for most people, may not always be true for you. Diabetes is a very individual disease - so stay observant about what is going on with you.

I'll give you just a quick example, regarding food. Many people have a problem eating potatoes, their blood sugar spikes. That doesn't happen to me, so I do get to eat them (although I try to avoid the butter and sour cream LOL). So watch what happens to your blood sugar when you eat, and you will be able to find a meal plan that works well for you.

Best of luck, and feel free to ask a lot of questions.

I know how you feel. For many years I feared than I was going to be diagnosed as diabetic. When it finally happened, it was no big deal. Actually, I'm probably healthier as a result. I lost 30 pounds, took up exercise and found that there were still plenty of foods to enjoy and I hardly missed some I had to restrict. The many low carb products available make it easier than in the past. I am controlling my blood sugar with diet and exercise. You will probably be able to do so as well.

Though unrelated I thought I'd share an experience here:-

At times one sees family members eating candy, ice cream and cake and it takes some effort in the beginning to refuse or stay off on the stuff but later I got used to it and don't miss it. I have inlaws who know nothing about diabetes and don't care to find out and look at me like I am "stupid" when I refuse chocolate cake and insist I "taste/try" it and I found it easier to just say I don't feel like eating it rather than trying it. For me if I take a small nibble of this stuff I want to eat the whole thing then and I figured it was easier not to get a taste of it but instead go get a healthy/low carb kinda desert like a couple of strawberries or something.
