My 20 year old son is facing a 2 year jail sentance on Sept. 25th and I am scared for him. He is scitzo effective (xcuse my spelling). He has been hospitalized many times for his self distructive and delusional behavior. He has a long history and tells me he will write a book of his life one day, and be assured, it would be a book to read!!
Without getting too long, his dad was physically and sexually abusive and his troubles began as a toddler. Teen years hit and he spiralled out of control. His Dx started as depression, to adhd to bipolar and finally to scitzo effective disorder (xcuse my spelling).
He has such delusional thoughts and thinks the world is ending, is obsessed with natural cotastrophies, believes he was born in another life and the list goes on.
A month ago, he got into trouble with the law and the judge gave him an option of signing a paper that if he stays out of trouble for 1 year, all charges will drop. If he does anything, he faces 2 years and will not get a trial. As he was signing this, my heart was sinking!! I know my sons crazy behavior and knew he couldn't fullfill the year. THAT night he got into a fight with his soon to be ex wife)another impulsive move marrying her) She went to the police and filed charges. Later, realizing she was overreacting, wanted to drop them. Well, too late. The DA is now involved and the charges can't be dropped.
My dilema, he came home tonight in a crazed state, saying he can't go to jail and wont. He said he will flip and he will do things that have always been inside him. I am so very scared because I know of his crazy thought process and either he may hurt himself, or others.
Can I get him to be hospitalized for his mental illness instead of putting him in jail? I fear if I don't investigate this avenue, I will have regrets in the end if someone is hurt.
I have been dealing with health issues myself and didn't feel the strength to fight another battle but I have no choice to muster up a little more and get him some help before his life is destroyed. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks so much!!

I am very sorry that you are going through this and hope the best.
Your son should be able to get institutionalized instead of going to jail based on his state. If it is not too late I would definetly check into this.
Hang in there, I know you are going through a rough time. To get him focused on something in life I think that you should encourage him to write his book and get out his negative feelings on paper and not on others.
Take care:)
