Mongobongo,

There are so many variables to a person's recovery it is impossible for anyone to tell you what you may or may not be able to do after a fusion. Age, condition, number of levels, which levels, nerve damage all plays a part in recovery.

4/30/07, I had a fusion L3-S1, laminectomy with instrumentation. I have some significant continuing nerve involvement that may be a career ender. My NS said she did the surgery (as an emergency) so that I did not become paralyzed in my left leg. That would have been a career ender for sure. Surgery was my only choice.

You have a lot of things to consider. Have you gotten a second or third opinion? That would be a good place to start. Good luck to you.
