Hi. I am in anxiety. My mom who is a Diabetic- type 2 patient becomes insulin resistant. So Doctor prescribed Metaformin for immediate remedy. But the problem is that she has been suffering from Diarrhea till then she began to take the medicine. I repeatedly asked to the Doctor what I should do now and he advised to continue the same medications without any interference. Now somebody suggested me that the medicine should be discontinued otherwise the condition may turn into more vulnerable in terms of low Bp, breathing problem, and even sudden heart failure. She is 60yrs old.I am absolutely confused and not able to take any decision whether I will wait for any second opinion or stop all the medication:confused: .

Many people get diarrhea when they first start taking metformin. One of the ways to avoid that is to start at half the dose, and then increase it after a couple of weeks. You might ask her doctor about this, as I don't know if the pills can be split (some pills can, and some pills are not supposed to be split).

Diarrhea is a side effect for some.......I am on Metformin ER tabs for Insulin Resistance......I had some problems my first week.....but they have resolved. I take mine with food and am moving up slowly to the dosage my Doctor wants......1,000mg twice a day..........I am taking 500mg twice a day right now. I am new with the Metformin but I have heard the ER has less side effects..... Make sure she is taking her medication with a meal.......see if she is taking the Extended Release pills.........you might suggest to her Doctor that she try the ER if she is not already on them.........
Good luck...........Let us know what happens..............Oleander
