Marti,

I can relate 100%! I was struck in the forehead exactly two years ago with an airborne golf ball. Two black eyes and a huge lump on my forehead, I came down with post concussion syndrome and two months after that I started receiving pain in my legs, arms and upper shoulders. It took several months, a cat scan, x-rays, MRI and EMG (which all came up within normal limits) and many specialists later. Finally my PCP diagnosed me with Fibromayalgia / Myofacial Pain.

It has been a very long journey. Six months after the injury I was forced by my docs to stop working and apply for disability. I was devistated as I was running my own marketing/Graphic design business and things were going so well.

I experience chronic pain from head to toe on a daily basis. It's everything I can do to take care of myself, home and 12 yr. old daughter. I have difficulty standing for more than 10 minutes at a time and a trip to the grocery store is a major task.

My docs have been wonderful. They have no doubt that the pain exists and have no problem with my diagnosis. You may want to seek another opinion. Have you seen a Rheumotologist?

Take care,
Hope

Hi Marti,

Yep, shoulder pain and it STINKS! I do, however, have an alternative med solution that works for me, and has worked well for and 3 of 5 people I have used the procedure on. One of the 2 it didn't work for was just too antsy to sit still long enough for it to work, and the other has significant emotional problems creating blocks to healing. Anyway, here goes:

The process is called 'moxibustion' and has been used by healers from the beginning of memory. A tightly-packed 'cigarette' rolled of the herb mugwort is used. This cig. is lit and held as close as possible, without burning the skin, to the injured/sore site. This is moved around over the skin of the injury so as to warm, yet not burn, the area. Great care must be taken to not cause any burns, the cig. must be kept moving slowly over the area until the cig. is too small to work with.

The effects may be further enhanced by applying saran-type wrap over the area, and covering with moist heat for aprox. 20 min.

a gradual improvement should be noted over the next 2-3 days. This procedure can be repeated as often as necessary until relief is achieved, tho I wouldn't do it more than once week (I've never found it necessary).

Moxibustion sticks are available at health food stores. If not, the dried herb can be rolled in cigarette papers availabe at most stores.

Hope this helps :D

Oh, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Marti!!!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif

I have been fighting with state comp for almost 4 years after being assaulted on the job. No luck yet for me!! My original injury was solely on the left side, but your muscles in your back will have a tendency to have "sympathy-pains" as my physical therapist calls it. Also if you tend to favor the other un-injured side it may make you feel painful. Hope this is helpful.

I have found that stretching the back to much will make it worse.
Exersise but don't inflame the area.
I lift weights when I feel good but slowly and lite.
I believe the weights just pump that area up, of course when time passes the area can become over fatigued.
" If it hurts, STOP it".

THANKS EVERYONE FOR REPLYING..I AM GOING TO TRY EVERYTHING I CAN. I AM GOING TO CHECK OUT THE MOXIBUSTION.
I AM SORRY THAT YOU ARE FEELING SO BAD, HOPE.
IF I LIFT LIGHT WEIGHTS AT ONLY A FEW REPS, IT STILL IS REALLY SORE THE NEXT DAY. AND IT MAKES IT VERY DISHEARTENING,
BUT WE KEEP STRUGGLING ON!!
THANKS, AGAIN.

Get an MRI of your NECK. Disk problems in your neck can refer pain down your shoulder/arm.

I agree that the MRI should be of the neck. The pain down the arms and shoulder is probably from nerves that are being pinched following the injury.
I have severe burning in the shoulders. Weight lifting makes it worse.
Neuromuscular massage makes it better, but doesn't cure. It does however allow me to take fewer pain medications and have a happier, more fulfilling life.
Recently I had Prolotherapy on my shoulder and neck and I feel that those treatments may be a permanent cure.

If you want to research that, the Internet has sites. Also, I have recommended two books that explain the healing subject well, "Prolo Your Pain Away" and "Prolo Your Fibromyalgia Pain Away" by Dr Ross Hauser. There are web sites to help you find a Dr that does prolotherapy. I read both books, and wish Dr Hauser would have just combined them, as they both had very important information in them, but the first two chapters are identical.

The pain in my upper arm can be incredible. It is in my shoulder as well. All started from an auto accident. I can never understand why no one has never xrayed or done anything with my shoulder/arm specifically. They've done trigger points/botox. I guess they know what they are doing.

Sometimes you just need to take control. The Drs are so busy and they don't always think of everything. If you request a MRI of your neck because the pain is "level 10", maybe he will hear you. Then you will know.

I believe my fibro is post traumatic. I hurt my neck and now have hypermobility in three vertebra and a bulging disc below. I've read everything have seen a neck specialist from the begining. Have you ever heard of Cervical facet syndrome? Here's and interesting part of an article in regards to neck pain and a study showing pattterns of pain from different levels of cervical vertebra. I had my neck injected recently and have had some relief. My right side has been the problem with pain extending down over my right shoulder. If you have Posttraumatic Fibro maybe this is part of the cause of pain.

Cervical Facet Syndrome

Author: Robert E Windsor, MD, FAAPMR, FAAEM, FAAPM, President and Director, Georgia Pain Physicians PC; Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Emory University

Each facet joint seems to have a particular radiation pattern upon painful stimulation. Even in subjects without neck pain, stimulation of the facet joints by injecting contrast material into the joints and distending the capsule produces neck pain in a specific pattern corresponding to the specific joint
In a study of 5 such subjects, joint pain referral patterns were mapped out (Dwyer, 1990). The C2-C3 facet joint refers pain to the posterior upper cervical region and head, while the C3-C4 facet joint refers pain to the posterolateral cervical region without extension into the head or shoulder. The C4-C5 joint refers pain to the posterolateral middle and lower cervical region, and to the top of the shoulder. The C5-C6 joint refers pain to the posterolateral middle and primarily lower cervical spine and the top and lateral parts of the shoulder and caudally to the spine of the scapula. The C6-C7 joint refers pain to the top and lateral parts of the shoulder and extends caudally to the inferior border of the scapula. The full article is at

Sorry this is so long but I'm always willing to pass on anything that might be of help someone.

Have had facet injections. They are a real blast. They stuck my back between several vertebrae. Then they do it again. You can get a placebo response so they do it a second time a few weeks later. Was so nervous the first that the Atavan they prescribed for before came back up so did it unmedicated. The atavan stayed down the second time so wasn't so bad considering. These tests are mostly to rule out facet injury. I had no idea what they did so am just passing info on in case you need it.
