I recently had an iron test and was told the result was 13.7. I don't know exactly what type of test it was, but all the results I find online start at 60. Does my score sound right? I was told I was in the normal range.

Its really hard to tell from such a general description (at least for me, others may be more astute. come to think of it, they'd definitely be more astute). It could be your ferritin, where 13.7 would be within range where I get my testing done, range is from 10-291, but is still extremely low as far as ferritin levels go. And I'm just guessing here on what kind of test it is. There are a few iron tests out there.

I suggest getting any and all copies of your testing. Its good to have for your own reference anyway. When you have the name of the test and the test numbers, please post them here, along with the range (this is very important). Ranges tend to differ from lab to lab due to differences in testing techniques and equipment.

Please keep us posted. :)

It sounds to me that this may be your "hemoglobin" value. Hemoglobin is not a true "iron" test but it measures if you have anemia. Anemia is often caused by iron deficiency, so if your hemoglobin is low, many doctors will assume it is due to low iron and, therefore, call it an iron test.

As Nyxie said, it could be a ferritin test, which measures your iron stores; however, at least at my lab, I've never seen ferritin measured out to the decimal point. It is usually a whole number. However, hemoglobin always goes out to fractional levels.

Additionally, most doctors won't due a specific iron test until your "anemia" panels look funny. So, if it is hemoglobin, a 13.7 is within the normal range.
