Hi there bear with me as this is my first time... I usually refrain from the internet as conversation because I feel clueless. I have a sister who has been diagnosed ,as far as what we can figure out because of all the privacy , as severe bi polar at this moment she thinks we have done something bad meaning her family. She was living in chicago and we flew her home. day one she took a bunch of pills. day two tried to get my dad arrested. day three in hospital trying to get her help. The hospital released her on her own without calling anyone . Last I knew as of yesterday my 34 yr old baby sister is roaming somewhere in Mobile by herself and her atm card isnt working, someone said she went to a halfway house. What can I do ...how do I get her home and to trust me where I can get her some help....she has 3 children that love you and she loves totally. She is a great mom, but her ex husband is talking about not letting her around the kids anymore....she needs someone desperatly... any light???

texas,
I feel your pain of not knowing where a loved one is or how to really get help for them. All I know is if your sister is over 18, which she is,there is really nothing you can do... it's up to her. It's frustrating and sad and I'm going through something similar with my brother. Year after year we go through the same things with him, it's his (selfish..I think) decision to not take meds so he's very very unstable like your sister. I'm afraid that it will contiune for ever since he has made it clear he won't ever take med's and hasen't in years,. I wish you, your sister and family the best of luck. I guess my advice would be to be there for her if she'll let you, encourage her to get help and get on meds asap. Also know that you and your family are no alone. Although I know it seems that why and I feel the same, for me finding this board and reading other people's stories has helped me and hopefully it will help you too.

 Hello...You are an angel for your sister but she is going to make her own crazy mistakes in her life and there is nothing you can do about it except to let her know you are there for her.
Now, as far as BI-POLAR...it's a Very Treatable disorder. Robin Williams the comedian is bi-polar as are hundreds of thousands of people. Most states have FREE mental health care for their people.
Because of her bazar behavior, I believe there may be more to the picture...possibly drug use. Bipolars have tendencies to self medicate with drinking, pot, crack etc.
The other old name for bi polar is manic depressive....meaning very big highs...like shopping for days followed by very deep lows not wanting to get out of bed. Most of my friends are bi polar and are musicians, clothes designers, hair stylists...creative people.
So, Chill...keep your head and know that there is so much help out there and great meds! She will call YOU....when she is READY. Trust Me because I know!!
All my best,
Barb in Phoenix
