My MIL had AML dx'd 4/06, did chemo, relapsed 4/07, did chemo, relapsed 9/07. Her WBC was 35,000 and went to 75,000 in one week. The drs will not treat her and hospice will now come once a week.

Any guesses on how long we have with her? What can we expect? Worst case, best case? Experiences?

Nevermind.

I was looking for some support from somebody who experienced this, but we lost her in October. Just in case anyone needing support comes across this... we only had 1 week from her final diagnosis until she was comatose (post stroke 2* leukemia) for 1 more week, so get that time in with your loved one!

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. My aunt died of AML in June. She was a completely normal, healthy, bubbly & energetic 54 year old, then one day she called me to tell me she had it and she was put in the hospital & BAM 6 weeks later she was gone. You really never do know how long you have with someone so you are right about spending all the time you can. I never got to go visit her in the hospital, I was told she could have NO visitors b/c of the germs anyone may carry can weaken her already weak immune system. Heck, if I knew she wasn't going to make it (the Dr.'s gave her a 75% survival rate) I would've went & saw her anyway if I knew it would've been my last time.

My mom was diagnosed with AML last week. She was airlifted to the hospital after going to the local hospital and they were not equipped to treat her. It seems to me that leukemia is very different for every person who has it.
The doctor told us that if she had waited 12 more hours to get to the hospital she would have died. Her WBC at the highest was 165,000! She has since undergone 5 days of chemo and her WBC is 300 with a platelet count of 10 (normal platelet count is between 150 and 400- I am assuming that is counted in the thousands). She has a sinus infection now- who knows where that came from. Anyway, it is like being on pins and needles every single day because anything could happen. It is very scary! Just looking for support.
