View Full Version : Polycythemia Vera Question

I too am wondering if I might have Polycythemia vera?

I do not have the exact numbers, since my Dr. just called me and said that my numbers were a little high
I think that the RBC was 5.8 normal is Female: 4.2 to 5.4 million cells/mcL RBC was a little high
HCT was a little high they didn't give me the value
HGB was a little high it was 16.5 normal is Adult women: 12-16 gm/dl

Other than that white blood cells and platelets, ect was fine erythropoietin levels also came back normal. He said to go give a pint of blood. I have never had a problem before. I am 30yr old female.
I am asking because my Dr. just told me to give blood and seemed totally unconcerned. I tried to ask him questions and he said that about 2 in 10,000 have some form or polycythemia and I shouldn't worry about it. He just told me to give blood and follow up in 3 months. I asked him about finding the cause and he didn't express any interest in doing that.
Thanks for any help.

Today I went and gave blood they said hematocrit level was 42.

I think I'd listen to the doc. Your levels are not very high and you don't seem to have the usual symptoms.... night sweats, flushed complexion and itching. If you do become symptomatic sometime in the future and/or you HCT shows up high in your regular physical exams, the news is not all that bad. There is no cure but it can be treated and you are more likely to die with PCV than to die of it.

3 years ago I had suspected polycythemia as all my RBC's came back a little high. After months of blood tests and various other tests both my gp and haematologist told me my counts were down to dehydration.

Needless to say I began drinking at least 3 litres of water most days and my counts have remained well within normal ever since. Never think the worst until you know the facts, nor would I go reading horror stories on the net as any goon can own a website.
