my hematologist is livid with me for going back on depo after my dvt and my massive PE. thing is, it has been a year and my coumadin levels are mostly even and i have had no problems and i have quit smoking 6 months ago. i want to go off of coumadin though, cause i have to go to the anticoagulation clinic weekly... is there any alternatives to coumadin and lovanox?

Julych, I'm surprised that any doctor would put you on Depo with your history. I posted this on another thread . . . I had a severe case of DVT from BCP when I was 19, and was on Coumadin for three years after that. I thought everything was just peachy. At 36 I was put on Depo, and nine months later -- another DVT. Please don't take any unnecessary risks!

I too, am surprised that your doctor would put you back on Depo. I've got loads of female problems and was on one form of birth control pills or another since the age of 13, and I got my blood clot Christmas Eve last year at the age of 25. My DVT was huge, solid from my calf up into my groin. I have been told by countless doctors that I could never, ever go back on any form of hormonal birth control ever again. One nurse in the hospital I had said that an IUD was possible, but I can't see how that would be any better than hormonal stuff, but then again I was on the Pills for medical reasons, not for to prevent pregnancy.
I honestly have no answers for you as for alternatives to Coumadin or Lovenox. I would honestly listen to your doctors who are telling you that Depo might not be safe for you. This is obviously just my opinion, but I wouldn't take the chances.
Wishing you only the best! *HUGS*
