So i went to a new GI doc in search of some answers to my severe stomach pain and recent heart burn! Basically i was told to stop chewing sugar-free gum for a week then call back! At first...........i could have died!!! What??? This is the 2nd GI doc i have seen in the last 2 yrs and still havent gotten any help to my stomach pain..............which i am assuming is IBS! The only way i can have a daily bowel movement is taking citricel! This pain is soooo severe and can last hours! I guess the main ingredient in sugar free gum is horrible for your stomach and i chew ALOT of gum throughout the day! I have had a colonoscopy and the barium test done.............but i have never been given a med to treat my stomach. Nothing over the counter helps me! My main question is...................has anyone else been told something like this............and had such trouble trying to diagnose a problem. My husband has IBS and right away they did a scope and a colonoscopy and he is on a med that works wonderful for him! He has IBS where he would have 9 bowel movements a day..............which i am complete opposite where i cant go without taking fiber!

Have you tried it? It would be wonderful if that was the problem and it was that easy of a fix.
I've gotten nowhere with doctors in 10 years. I can't say I have much hope of finding out what's wrong anymore, let alone figuring out how to fix it.

I stopped chewing sugar free gum for 4 days now. Im suppose to give it a week which will be Wed and then call the Dr back! So far nothing has changed. Im extremely frusterated as to how many doctor's just give you medication WITHOUT a diagnosis! It's like they play a guessing game........I guess anyone could be a dr..........we could just guess at what the problem is and perscribe a pill..............and make lots of money too! At this point any type of medication is looking good if it will help my pain!

Hi Leah............how were you diagnosed? Did you have a test done? Or did your doc just list your symptoms and perscribe a medication?

Hello:
My doctor did alot of tests on me and all the tests that I had came back normal/fine so he said that I had IBS and put me on Bentyl. It is for people with IBS.
