Hello everyone. I am new here. Here's my story. I had blood work done. My BS was 165 and that was with fasting. I had all the symptoms, thirsty, fatigue, leg cramps at night, getting up twice a night to go to the bathroom, blurred vision. My Dr. gave me a BS meter to check my BS at home. So that evening I waited 2 hrs. after my meal. Reading was 448! Next morning at
6 am my BS was 307! That night my BS was 324. I called my Dr. and she prescribed me Metformin 500 mg at breakfast and at supper. Also a cinnamon pill once a day. I started taking it last night. I sure hope this works with a new diet and exercising. This morning at 6:00 my BS was 209. This is really scaring me. I have so much to learn. My eating habits. Where do I begin?? I want to exercise but I read on here if you exercise your BS will go up???
Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated.
Oh by the way, I am 53 and I could loose a few pounds also.
Thanks.................

Hi, I am new here ,too. I am supposed to start the same meds you are.
I am 49. My fasting BS was 151. My A1c was 7.1..
I am waiting on the nurse to call me back. They didn't tell me much what to do.
I have lost 5 pounds this week.
I hope you get things under control. It sure is hard to know where to start.

Well, at least having high BS will make a person loose some pounds! :) I too have lost 4 lbs since Monday. I am in WV too. Guess we'll have to eat more veggies and climb these mountains! Good luck. Hope your nurse has some news to help you.

Hi folks. Yes, there is a lot to learn. The good news is that you can still live a long, healthy, happy life with diabetes. It just means you have to work a bit harder than you may have been to take care of yourself.

Exercise is good, and it can raise your blood sugar somewhat, but it is still good. Remember that you shouldn't exercise heavily if your blood sugar is over 250 - it can lead to dehydration and other problems.

Also, it can take a while for the meds to kick in, so don't worry too much if your blood sugars don't come down immediately. While insulin will bring you down in a matter of hours, it can take days or a week or more for oral meds to get the job done. So don't lose faith.

Try to up the amount of fibre in your diet. That means whole grains and healthy fruits and veggies. Try to avoid "white" foods, like white bread, pasta, rice, and of course junk food.

Best of luck to you both and pls keep us posted.

Thank you Cora, I got out of eating whole grains and I really regret that.
I used to eat them more then my husband didn't care for them but I guess now he will have to learn to like them. Thank you for your help. Snodove

So how are you doing? I have my BS down to 140's - 150's. Not good but sure is better than what it was before. I seen my nurse yesterday and she said I was doing great. I have lost 15 lbs. in 18 days. I can sure tell it too.
I had my eyes checked yesterday. A big change in my eye sight. But no sugar signs there! I know I should have waited till I got my sugar stablized but I just can't wait. I can't see to read. I bought the book: Type 2 Diabetes The First Year. It is so good so far. I would strongly suggest it. I am trying to learn new recipes too. I need about a 100 ways to cook a carrot!! :D

When your blood sugar starts coming down, the lens in the eye needs time to adjust, and that might be one or two months. My eyesight was very blurred and I was advised not to get new glasses until the blurring stopped.

Blood sugar in the 300 to 400 range is very high, and if I were in your shoes I would start cutting down on all high carb foods, and stick to the low vegetbles such as cabbage lettuce, green beans, turnips, peppers, etc.

Myself, I have been a type 2 for over 10 years. I eat very little bread, and almost no potatoes. Rice is out entirely.

Good luck to you.

Can't you eat brown rice? My Dr. told me to count my Carb. grams.
For Breakfast I can have 45 grams of carbs
For Lunch I can have 45 - 60 grams of carbs
For Dinner I can have 60 - 75 grams of carbs
And a snack with no more than 30 grams of carbs.
This has helped soooo much. I have got my BS down into the 100's now which is better than before when I was 500, 400 or in the 300's.

Hi again. Notice that I edited my post. I had written 20 years. But it should be over "10" years.

Very nice to hear that you have brought those readings down so well!! Nice going.

Yes, I eat a little brown rice, but I cannot eat that many carbs as you do or else I would have to be on insulin. I have only 10 CHO (carbohydrate ) grams for breakfast. For the other meals I try and have less than 30 CHO grams. With that kind of regime my blood sugars after eating will be about 117 (6.5 Canadian).

However my blood sugar rises to 162 (9, Canadian) in the morning whether I eat or not--this is called the dawn phenomenon. I started taking metformin 3 times a day this spring, and that helps. I do treat myself to ice cream and things like that.

So, keep it up and lots of luck.

HI Sorry I hadn't gotten back with you sooner. last week was crazy.
Trying to get my medicine. Appointment with the diatetion. They caneclled it Monday and didnt call til I had left already. Grr....
but went Friday and got that set up. I go tomorrow to start my first class.

Glad you lost so much. I have lost about 7. I feel so much better. I guess the only symptom I could say I had looking back was being tired.
I find that walking walking walking really helps me.
If I dont walk my sugar goes up some.

So far mine has been in the lower 100's but last night it was 152 eating 2 hrs.
I didn't like that but I didn't walk yesterday evening.
Ate later than usually for dinner ,too.

Sounds like you are doing well. Keep it up. I had my eyes checked in March.
I need to really see about some other things.
Keep in touch,sno

niftyfifty, I share in your concerns. I was diagnosed 4 months ago, and although my readings arent as high as yours were, I am experiencing the same difficulties you are. Right now, carbohydrates, single high abnormal testing readings, good readings when I think they should be bad, and bad readings when I expect them to be good. Carbohydrates might as well be rocket science to me right now.

I have trouble deciding when to test, other than morning and before bed, and alot of the medical sites, with articles written by doctors give totally conflicting advice.

I test 4 or 5 times a day. morning, before lunch, before dinner, a couple of hours after dinner, and bedtime. I am slowly learning what affects my sugar levels the most, although I get some real worrisome readings for no reason sometimes.

In all niftyfifty, what I'm trying to say is that we have a lot to learn, and sometimes things dont seem logical, and I certainly hope that is because of misunderstandings about the condition. So dont feel alone because I think all of us newly diagnosed have the same concerns. I have decided to attend a diabetes seminar at the hospital to help me.

last thing I want to share with you, is that I think your carbohydrate guidelines given by your doctor are high(from what I know). I keep my carb intake at breakfast at about 20gr., and I have no idea what the rest of the day counts are, even though my readings are improving as I hunt and peck, by testing constantly for certain foods that I know I cant have now. You are not alone by any means niftyfifty, and I think we have to work hard to keep trying to understand our condition, and learn to accept that our eating habits have changed forever, and finally accept it 100%

prayers your way...................rob
