Dear Subs,
I know your a fellow BPPV suffer so I'm wondering if you could help me out. For the past 10 days I have been feeling this really fuzzy sensation in the middle top part of my head. It's almost like my neck is under a magnet with this annoying buzz and fuzzy pressure feeling.
Could this be loose crystals in the ear floating around or could it be some kind of virus that hit my labyrinth?
---I had a dix-halpike by my therapist 3 days ago and my eyes were jumpy but no (spins) in the goggles so not enough to put me in the epely chair. She said my left ear was jump too. Possibly making me bi-lateral whatever that means.
---Now I'm under the impression that when you feel the strong quick vertigo spins from BPPV is caused by the horizontal canal...is this true?
--What are the roles of the anterior and posteriour canals? When crystals get lose in those does that produce the symptoms of falling back/floating type stuff.
-I've read some stuff on the inner ear sticky and I just can't comprehend it clearly enough. I've read about MEP maneuevers, i'm just scared that I wil further loosen my crystals.
-My neuro said that most likely my hair cells in my right and possibly left ear were destroyed by a virus thus producing these loose crystals.
Is there any real hope for this madness?
Thanks a whole bunch for any info you can give me man.
cheers,
shane

Hi Shane
Think the best thing in the "Sticky" to read is:
Chronic Dizziness - D Solomon MD, NT Shepard MD at:
http://www.treatment-options.com/article.cfm?PubID=NE04-4-1-03&Type=Article&KeyWords
That is the one ur most likely to need/benefit from.
Since it is likely ur not the first phase(Acute....) & not in last(Failure....)
Acute (Immediate) Compensation
Chronic (Long-Term) Compensation
Failure to Compensate
With occasional---Decompensation.
Ur questions:
Could this be loose crystals in the ear floating around or could it be some kind of virus that hit my labyrinth?.......
---Not likely on the first---no way of knowing on the second---but doubt it.
had a dix-halpike.....
---The testing for this junk is all "Indirect Testing" i.e., no way to get into the vestibular area and do "Direct Testing"---short of surgery---plus---when u sum all these indirect tests results up---that a person can be given---it still comes down to the medical "EXPERTISE" of the medical group and even then----its a "Highest Probability" Dx(i.e.,their guessing--educated guessing---but guessing) Given that---and since "Epley's" are not likely to cause problems but solve them---I would have thought---why not a "Epley".
Possibly making me bi-lateral whatever that means.....
---Means both vestibular(right/left ears) systems are injured/involved
strong quick vertigo spins from BPPV is caused by the horizontal canal.....
---Guess anything is possible---but-----the most telling/predominate VERTIGO symptoms of BPPV is "latency" and "Fatiguing"---due to the "Physical Mass of the Crystals"---takes time for them to move/stop---when u position ur head & when u stop----so just takes time for the crystals to start/stop their movement---it can take 15-45 seconds for them to start to move and 15-45 sec to stop---(has been longer/shorter by 30/40 sec) this latency and fatiguing when VERTIGO(sometimes when not) is present---along with positional nystagmus---can be/is used to Dx--- BPPV---have not heard about "strong quick vertigo" determining which canal has the rocks...
roles of the anterior and posterior canals? crystals lose....symptoms of falling back/floating......(and horizontal canal)
---there are three semicircular canals in each inner ear----each one at right angles to the other two in three different planes--there is a fluid in these canals---& very fine hairs stick out into the fluid---in----this fluid(suspended) are very tiny particles---called otoliths---i.e.,ear stones/rocks----turn ur head in any direction and the ear rocks---follow but not immediately(nor do the stop immediately)---the ear rocks hit the hairs sending nerve impulses to the brain--- which has LEARNED--(Repeat LEARNED--from when u 1st started to move as an infant)---how to use the impulses to indicate different aspects of balance---after the vestibular injury---- balance system remains injured----but the brain can be retrained/adapted to the injury(in most cases)---what symptoms can cause falling back/floating,etc....not sure---their(medical types) that far advanced in understanding exactly how each area of the brain functions & what paths are used to pin it down.
read some stuff on the inner ear sticky and I just can't comprehend it clearly enough......
---Yep its difficult.
read about MEP maneuvers---scared that I wil further loosen....crystals
---Its possible---but if u think ur problem is that---- their lose already-- why not do the Epley/MEP???? U or them???
neuro said that most likely my hair cells in my right and possibly left ear were destroyed by a virus thus producing these loose crystals.....
---Once again possible---but----usually munches on a portion---does not destroy whole thing-----and both-----likely------???
Is there any real hope for this madness?
Sure---in the vast majority of BPPV injuries---it is a TWO Step process--
1. (Epley/MEP)get the rocks out(permanently) and,
2. (VRT)retrain the brain to interpret the new/modified nerve signals

Wow, thank's a lot subs...my doctor told me i know more about inner stuff than most general doctors. so by your research and expertise, "trust me" you def know more than 90% of the general doctors including the hmo types that just brush you off and give you a reveral to someone...most likely an ENT, and most ENT'S have no clue. Thank's again!
Cheers!
