I found this on another message board & thought that all of you might enjoy it as much as I did.........
If you have Fibromyalgia, then you have one of these Syndromes too!
RESEARCH BY CAT
LAZY DOCTOR SYNDROME
Clinical findings: Patient presents with long list of complaints. This is obviously a sign of increasing workload, resulting in “way too much of my time”. Diagnosis is confirmed when patient expresses relief to know that there is a name for all of her suffering. Referral to a specialist will undoubtedly confirm suspicions. Conclusion: Patient has a deep-seated need to have me pay attention to each of her concerns. Possible psychological pattern of believing that she is really suffering. If patient persists in this pattern – possible referral to psychiatric department. Prognosis: No further appointments necessary.
DEAF DOCTOR SYNDROME
Clinical Findings: Patient presents with extensive history of ....................................Comp laints of chronic..................patient is exhibiting frustration throughout this consultation............. Diagnosis is confirmed when patient admits that doctors don’t listen to him. Conclusions: No treatment necessary. Offered anti-depressants, since the patient’s state of mind deteriorated to a crying episode. Possible referral in the future to the mental health department if this pattern persists. Prognosis: Fair. Even better if he learns to accept his condition.
STUPID DOCTOR SYNDROME
Cliinical Findings: Patient presents with verry complicatedd medical histry. I’ve never seen heard anything like it. I don’t remebner andfy thihngv about thisdh isn school. Patenti insists that there musssst be something woring. This is very confusing. I don’t theink the patient is making sense. Concluzons: Diagnosis confirmed by the patients beelief that there is more infocaation out there than i know. Inuated tha t i am all doctrs ar stupid. Prognsos: It is obvios that this ptient is faking..
MORON DOCTOR SYNDROME
(Please see, above. This syndrome is synonymous with Stupid Doctor Syndrome. Some increased degree of anger and frustration is noted in the patient, thus the difference)
ACCOUNTANT-INDUCED PAIN SYNDROME
(Synonymous with Managed Care Syndrome, and HMO Syndrome.)
Clinical Findings: The patient presents with continued pain complaints even though she knows that she has fibromyalgia. As doctors it is our responsibility to not contribute to the patient’s denial of condition. The patient specifically continues to request referrals to physical therapies, including massage therapy, and water therapy as possible treatments to relieve her symptoms. Diagnosis is confirmed when it is obvious that she would like us to pay for relief from her suffering. Prognosis: Good if we can get patient to agree to psychiatric help as this is a far more reasonable expense on our part. The patient is delusional which points in the direction of psychological origin. Minimal follow- up until patient gives up.
WAR AGAINST DRUGS SYNDROME
Clinical Findings: Patient presents with a history of unrelenting chronic pain. Serum tests all show normal. Patient has an obvious desire to obtain drugs. Has even gone as far as to research on the Internet about medications so that she could obtain the desired effects. Conclusion: Obviously a drug-seeker. If patient is able to obtain drugs from another physician, or if she attempts to schedule another appointment then, the diagnosis will be confirmed. Prognosis: Guarded-- patient will most likely become a drug addict.
ANAL RETENTIVE DOCTOR SYNDROME
Clinical Findings: Patient presents with symptoms that do not fit into any of the categories I am familiar with. Patient refuses to fit into my standards. Results of standard blood workup suggests pyschosomatic symptoms as explanation. Referral to Psychiatric Department. Prognosis: Poor – most likely patient will develop full-blown hypochondria.
ARROGANT DOCTOR SYNDROME
(This syndrome is also known as Egotistical Pompous *** Syndrome)
Clinical Findings: Patient presents with a very well organized history of symptoms going back for years. Her extensive complaints are supplemented with research information and resources. Patient is fluent in verbal communication involving medical terminology. She exhibits an abhorrent interest in her own state of being. Conclusion: The patient is obviously suffering from mental illness. Questioned use of anti-depressants. Patient confirms use of drugs normally prescribed for mental illness. Prognosis: Patient’s prognosis is yet to be determined. Poor, if factors contributing to the mental illness exhibited by patient’s insistence that I order specific tests, and delusions of grandeur with the belief that she could possibly be as smart or smarter than I am continue. Refuse all future appointment requests until maladaptive behavior ceases.
"FRAIDY CAT" DOCTOR SYNDROME
Clinical Findings: Patient presents with complicated history and list of symptoms. Patient says she needs relief from her suffering. Conclusion: This may be a time-consuming process of determining what brings the patient relief. It may be impossible. I may not win. I need to always be right. Patient expectations of me are greater than what I can accomplish. Risks noted. Prognosis: Guarded -- will refer on to someone else.
(SYNONYMOUS WITH FEAR OF COMMITTMENT SYNDROME and FEAR OF FAILURE SYNDROME.)
BURDEN PLACING DISEASE
(Secondary to any of the above Syndromes for unknown reason. This is by far one of the most common complications of Fibromyalgia.)
Clinical Findings: Patient presents with Fibromyalia. She is cognitive that she has this disease, yet she insisits that she has other medical problems. I persuaded patient that it was her responsibility to deal with the disease, yet she continued to ask "me" questions about previous or new symptoms. Conclusion: Patient is confused and anxious. She refuses to acknowledge that all of her symptoms are the result of the syndrome and the burden is hers. Classic denial. Prognosis: Unknown

Loved your posting - so very very true isn't it? I think we've all found these types of doctors and the sad part is they probably think they're doing a really great job with all of us hypochondriacs & pain relief seekers. Heck, who wouldn't be seeking pain relief when you are in pain all day??

I had all the above symptoms at one time or another and found a cure for it.Demand the doctors attention(you are paying him/her)list any questions or new symptoms before the visit and read them to the doctor.Demand a reply to all questions you have.I`ve got the greatest doc around he spends about an hour with his patients if needed.Fibro stinks.

Creeping, thank you SO much! One of the hardest things in all this has been dealing with the doctors and I've personally hit almost all of those syndromes personally. One of the things that this board has brought me is the knowledge that I'm not alone in this.

Footloop.... I think youre right, that sounds more like a nuerological problem. I read that as a symptom of something once. Ill see if I can find it again and post to you what I found. I hear you. I recently had a doctor who suggested to me that I had Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia (but to have a diagnosis was needless as the only treatment for these was exercise) But this comment was made only after... Ok, Ill tell you the story. I go to the doctor, a new PCP, with hopes of an open mind, fresh out of college with more knowlege of FMS than older doctors. What I got was some snot nosed Mama's boy. I came to him presently with agonizing neck pain that raidated down my arm into my fingers, making them tingle, but not numb. I also described how I was unable to drink anything but water as everything else would result in terrible low abdominal pain that I would compare to labor pains, followed, and occassionally relieved by explosive bowels. He prescribes me Previcid for Heartburn.
"But doc, I dont have heart burn, I know the difference between up and down."
"Yes, but heartburn can cause those pains in your arm"
"I dont have heartburn"
"Ever?"
"Well, sure, everyone experiences heartburn atleast once in their life, especially after eating certain kinds of foods."
"What kinds of foods cause this 'heartburn?'
"Ummmmm,y-you know, Spicy foods, citrus fruits..."
"Have you ever tried avoiding these foods?"
"I never eat these foods."
"But youre still experienceing reflux?"
"No."
"When I say 'reflux, I mean heartburn."
"NO, I know what reflux is, and NO, I Do not have heartburn, thats not what I mean by abdominal pain and explosive bowels."
"So youre not having heartburn right now?"
"NO."
"Do you ever have diarreah?"
"Are you in the same room with me?"
This guy was convinced that he was the doctor with the years of education and experience, and he was going to diagnose me with something. "Ahh, I am super doc, I have, yet again, saved the day by diagnosing a patient with a symptom they did not even know they were experiencing. Wile E. Doctor, Suuperr Geeenn-ee-usss."
Whadda BUTT HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!! Meanwhile he tells me my neck and arm pain are caused by tendonitis, prescribes me a muscle relaxer of which he tells me does NOT cause drowsiness. Good, because I have children at home. I go have the prescription filled and the pharmasist(sp) tells me very cautiously, "be careful with this, it causes pronounced drowsiness." YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!! That doctor better hope it does cuz if it doesnt Im coming back to kiss his **BLLLLEEEEEEEPPPPPPP**!!!!!!!!!! I immediatedly switched my PCP.

Hbic,
Boy are you good http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif
Gotta love your style. What a way with words. Where have you been? We need you sooo much http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/t_up.gif I wish I could be so funny about something so frustrating.
We try to keep up a sence of hummor and laughter is such a great medicine.
Exercise is great if you have the energy and the pain is managed well enough. I'd love for one of those know it all's to walk in our shoes for a day. They'd be signing a new tune before the first hour was up.

Have to share a funny story that happened with my Rheumy...
One of the autoimmune disorders I have is Raynaud's Phenomenon. It has to do with vascular restriction in "extremities". I've dealt with painfully "cold" toes/feet/hands/nose for a while but last winter I encountered a new one... My nipples got hard as rocks to the point they hurt really bad for well over two hours. I tried heating pads and exercise to get the blood flowing - to no avail. (realized apparently my boobs are big enough to be considered "extremities")
So when I see my Rheumy, I mention the cold-nipple problem and ask for suggestions.
His response? "Many men find that attractive".
My response - "How would you like a painful errection for three hours that won't go away?"
THAT shut him up. :)

Just had to bump up this thread. Sooooooooo funny!!
hbic, I was once diagnosed with heartburn, too (he called it GERD -- gastro-esophageal reflux disease) despite the fact that I had previously been diagnosed with low stomach acid. Since all my heart tests checked out completely normal, it made him feel like he was doing something about my chest pain!

Ditto! That was pretty funny, but true! I don't know a lot about fibromyalgia, but because of the pain/tenderness around my sternum and sometimes into my back, am thinking I have costochondritis. Yeah, the pain makes me think I'm having a heart attack a lot of the time...it's bad. After having a really bad "episode" last winter, my doctor also diagnosed me with GERD, even though I wasn't having any heartburn, etc., and prescribed Prevacid, which ended up screwing up my whole digestive system and caused several side effects. Now, I not only had the chest pain, I also had stomach pain, etc.!!! Great job, doc.
Would anybody care to relate to me whether or not you share my symptoms of chest pain/tenderness? AND, does it come and go, as in lasting for several days, then maybe subsiding for awhile...and does your's seem to worsen with exercise/activity involving those muscles? Thanks in advance.

Kat, my FM started out as chest pain radiating into my back, shoulder, behind one or both breasts, you name it, it radiated there. Sorry to hear you had such problems from the Prevacid. My doc also prescribed that, but luckily another doc of mine (the one who'd diagnosed the low stomach acid years ago, told me not to take it). Another doc also said it could be costochondritis (but costochondritis doesn't migrate around like that), exercise induced soreness, or he said, possibly, from a past episode of pleurisy (I'd had a viral illness before it all started). Here's a description of my pain at that time from a health journal I was keeping:
Chest discomfort continues. It is intermittent and changes in intensity and location, sometimes being felt as slight burning, other times as sharp and stabbing, other times as dull aching or simply more awareness of lungs(?) than normal. Location varies from substernal radiating to back, to behind either or both breasts, sometimes radiating down back of arms, to underarms, to diaphramatic. Most noticeable when lying down (in bed) or sitting quietly. Never severe enough to be noticeable while up and about.
Eventually, it did become noticeable during the day, and I also developed nighttime and early morning hip and leg pains. And yes, the chest pain would come and go. Have you had your heart thoroughly checked out? I hope, while he was diagnosing your heartburn, your doctor had the presence of mind to at least do that!

Thanks Sharon! Over the last 15yrs or so, I've had probably 4 stress tests, several EKGs, and 1 echocardiogram. All normal. I don't have this pain everyday...but when I do have it, it could last for 3-7 days. Sometimes it is behind the breasts, between the ribs near the sternum, what feels like along my spine and I have even woke up during the night with the pain and a "burning" sensation. Do you ever feel like the pain is like someone is squeezing your esophagus??? Maybe that was anxiety causing that, because the pain feels like I'm having angina sometimes. My mom has been having FM symptoms for several yrs. and hasn't found a doctor around here to take her seriously either. Right now I'm treating the pain with ibuprofen...sometimes it's not enough. Have you ever heard of "relapsing polychondritis"? This and the costrochondritis are related somehow to the fibromyalgia I believe.

O My - Chest Pain! For those who remember I have Fibro,DDD,Osteo,Bulging Discs, Bone Spurs, IBS, high blood pressure, Arteriosclerosis, Angina & Tachyardia.
Leg Pain has been so Severe the past 5 to 6 weeks. Doctor requested dopplor tests of both legs. It showed obstructions in both legs.
Was visiting with him yesterday about it when I began having hot flashes from quitting hormones middle of July and chest pain. Doc did an EKG, blood pressure was 188/108 and called hubby to take me to the ER.
Laid on the dang hard bed in ER for 2 1/2 hours and then was admitted overnite. 2 Ekgs and poked 5 different times for blood (all last nite - so sleep in hospital). Severe muscle spasms in back so Cardiologist ordered a demoral shot with phenegran.
Cardio decided to do a Nuclear Study of my heart excluding the treadmill test with some kind of medicine to bring up my heart rate.
That dang steel board you have to lay on made muscles spasm pain double. So after that portion of the test, he ordered valium in my IV. I was able to continue with the rest of test.
Long Story Short - Cardio has no clue about obstructions in both legs, but, did say My heart was fine.
Part of me is quite frustrated; yet, the other is relieved it's not my heart as my birthmom and her sister both had strokes in their 50's.

To Creep Crud
I just loved your posting it made me feel like a
human being to know so many other feel the same.
In fact it was quite ironic as it reafirmed a posting
I made just a few days ago the Healthcare Professionals
forum see below.
To scbagrrl,
That was just too funny. I wish I could be that quick witted. You brigtened my day, thanks for sharing that moment of laughter.
To anyone:
I'm 45 yr old female going thru menopause and have had several on going medical problems for years, just a few, bipolar, FM, RLS, severe headaches, The last
doctor I stuck it out with for 3yrs in fact I was the
last one in my family to say I've had quite enough of
her and I also changed doctors. She is only one of many doctors I've seen or taken my children to over the years that are either COLD AS ICE, rude, arogant, they DON'T listen, they DON'T believe what you tell them, flat out lie to you or just treat you like you could possibly know anything cause you didn't spend
x-number of years in med school. I've even had a doctor ridicule my child right in her presence. I've
had doctors make me feel stupid or inferior, to the point I was speakless. I had a doctor sarcastically tell me her magic wand was in the shop. My whole family has been made to our value is worth no more than the cheapest drugs on the market and been told so right to our face. Of the few times I've asked for pain med they've treated me like I'm a child that can't think for myself and no I've never had a drug problem in my life. Each year I get a nasty case of bronchitis and each year I end up asking for codiene cough med, it's noted in my chart for the last
4-5yr. I've told them year after year one small 4 oz bottle isn't enough for a cough that lasts 3-4 weeks. Yet they ignore me so I take less med to make it will last longer, then when I call back to get a second bottle they make me feel like I'm an addict. I'm so tired of having to start all over, disrupting medical care, then go thru a trial period with each new doctor? Please I desperately need help learning how to pick out a decent doctor, or maybe I just need to learn how to get their cooperation, does anyone have any advise? Extremely Disappointed in Doctors, Kiehn

HI
Your post was incredibly funny.I almost had my son go get a Depends. LOL (kidding) No problems there...yet!
As far as Dr's go, I wish you lived in the Chicago area. I met w/ a Rheum that's just great. My neurosurgeon also has a center for Fibro there. Two of the best Dr's there is!!! They belive everything you say, treat you w/ compassion& respect& concern. They tell me to call w/ any little problem, anytime. I feel I am still a human& not just a disease.LMK if you live anywhere near Rush/St Lukes Univ. Med Ctr. or CINN near downtown Chgo & I will give you thier names.
Good Luck

Loved the doctor types! We've all run into them at some point. The last one I went to at my HMO for serious back pain radiating on sciatica nerve to foot x-rayed my HIPS! So I go to other doctors (not HMO) who order MRI's and find that I have 3 herniated disks. A month later after going to numerous docs and being treated (because it is something they can see a picture of--in children, that is the concrete-manipulative stage that they outgrow when they are SEVEN by the way!)the HMO doc sends me a letter that says he's pleased to report that my x-ray is normal! Therefore my symptoms do not exist. Another problem is that once you are diagnosed with fibromyalgia, you can never be sick or injured with any other problem, because everything is FMS, and you should go to a class to learn how to deal with it, because patient "education" is soooo vital (and sooo much cheaper than visiting a doc and actually receiving any treatment.) Gotta keep smiling though. Thanks for the humor and the opportunity to vent!

Hi everybody,
CreepingCrud, thank you for bumping this thread up. I enjoyed it so very much and laughed myself silly reading these posts.
scbagrrrl, you sure set that doctor straight. I can't believe his reply to you. I give you credit for even bringing it up with him. I have a hard time talking about things like that with a doctor. Very embarrassing for me. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/redface.gif It's just too cool http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/cool.gif the way you handled it.
http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/t_up.gif for laughter. It helps so much.
Take good care, everyone,
Midnite :)

Hey, Julianne!!
I think a lot of us have been feeling bad lately.. I've been sick since last Friday & am finally starting to feel a little bit better.. Stupid allergies and weather decided to throw me into a flare.. Grrrr..
I'm happy to know that you're still out there though! I really hope that we all start feeling better soon.. I've been putting on my best Scarlett O'Hara act & just keep telling myself that "tomorrow is another day"..
Take Care,
Melanie
