My Grandmother is having a really hard time. She has a low iron count and she is anemic. She has gone through a million tests and doctors are unable to find any bleeding. She has a pretty healthy diet. She has had prescriptions for iron pills but her body doesn't except them. She is always tired and never has any energy. She has been having iron transfusions once a year. The doctor says that is too much. These transfusions should be lasting her 3-5 yrs. If there is anyone out there that is going through the same problem or has gone through the same problem please contact me with any information you may have. THANKS

You should test for hemolytic anemia. It's an autoimmune disease where you red blood cells are destroyed, thereby having less oxygen to the blood and iron and all that. The treatment for it is usually a course of steroids or IVgammagoblulin.

I would like to mention that for an elderly person it is not unusual for them to experience the inability to break down nutrients. Some elderly folks lose the ability to absorb B12 and iron as they age. This could be the sole reason for her deficiency. Take supplements in this case would not help. Also, I'm not sure that the iron infusions last as long as the doctor is saying. People with anemia seem to be getting them much more frequently than that.
