I am not a doctor, but you may wish to consider that it is gout. I know gout often affects the big toe, causing burning pain in that area, and redness/swelling. Apparently can be caused by too much protein (says my gp). Just a thought.

Hello,
I am new to the board,so forgive me if I do this wrong.
I have the burning feet and toes. I have neuropathy from my FM, CFS, and MPS and I am insulin resistant. They are not sure which one caused as they can all lead to this pain. Not much you can do, except keep them elevated and check your sugar. Massage tends to make mine hurt worse. Warm water seems to help also.
I alternate from hot compresses to ice bags.
But play it safe and have your blood sugar checked.

Yes I have burning feet. Worse at night, but not always. When it is bad sleep is out ofthe question. I did not associate this with FMS until recently when I was reviewing symptoms with my doc. I have had burning feet long before any of the other FMS symptoms. Doc is of the opinion that is if we can eliminate the burning feet a lot of the other symptoms will be reduced. He says he has seen it before where an almost unrelated symptom is the catalyst for the illness. As the treatment of FMS is not an exact science and each of us responds differenlty to treatment, I agreed to go along with the doc. He has put me on very high dose of steroids for two weeks and over the following two months is reducing the steroid slowly. I am in the middle of this at the moment and so far so good.

I get that burning foot problem from time to time, but am only distressed when it happens at bedtime. I find that two different things help. I take an enteric aspirin everynight anyway, so I take another one. Within 20 minutes the burning stops. When that happens, I get out the ice bags. The dogs hate having those bags in the bed, but within 10 minutes I'm asleep.

I am about sure that this problem is probably GOUT.

Last year when my secere back pain starting hurting me all over, my Neurosurgeon ended up sending me to a Rhuemotolist. There I had all sorts of blood tests done and the only thing that showed up not normal was my URIC ACID level was a touch too high.

I was told that 7.0 was normal for my uric acid and my test came back as 7.4 . The doctor said that 7.4 was not that high at all, but it was higher than the normal 7.0. The doc also asked me if I ever had any pain in my big toe, saying that a high uric acid level would cause gout. I told him that I had never experienced any pain in my feet at all.

Abotu 3-4 months ago I decided to go on the Mayo Clinic Diet and try to get some weight off. I really liked that type of diet because was a diet that I could follow with not a lot of trouble, HIGH PROTEIN/LOW CARBOHYDRATE.

Abotu 1 month into the diet, I awoke one morning to have the worst pain you could ask for in my big toe on my right foot. I thought it was the way I had my foot turned under the covers in bed. Well it seemed to be getting worst the next day, so I got the medical book out and looked up Gout and sure enough it sounded like I was the one writing that chapter on GOUT.

It said that High Protein was one thing that could set it off and Gout usually starts at night and you wake up the next day with the pain. I was still determined to stay on my diet, until 4-5 days and I could hardly walk. My right big toe was hurting so bad, I couldn't stand it any more.

The pain went from my big toe, up into the ball of my foot and that is where it ended. I didn't have any swelling at all, just severe pain. I never knew that, that much pain could come from such a small area. It felt like someone constantly pounding my toe with a sledge hammer.

I tried taking ALEVE, but had no change. Two days after I quit my High Protein diet, all of the pain stopped. I have been off of the diet for about 2 months and have not had any pain at all in my toe or foot.

There is a drug called Colchicine that is said to be the best drug out there for the gout. Many people use non-steroid/anti-inflammatory medications such as Naproxen/Naprosyn (the same thing in Aleve).

Hope this helps a little.

I had the most excruciating pain in my toes and foot. I was positive it was gout. My uric acid was in the normal range, so my doc gave me penicillan. Turns out it was a severe nail infection, even though my nails looked fairly normal. Within a few days I was like a new person. I've had some painful medical experiences, but this foot and toe pain was the worst--same sledge-hammer feeling, 24/7, but absolutely unbelievable at night.
