View Full Version : My mattress story

I've been sleeping on a 12 yr old mattress, and since it was kinda worn out, I had put a 4 inch thick foan mattress on top. My daughter convinced me that my mattress could be causing a lot of my back probs so I finally went and bought a new mattress, a Sealy with the tempera-sure foam in it. I was really looking forward to it, esp. since I heard so many good things about this foam. So I finally sleep on it, and instead of waking up as usual and feeling like a truck hit me, I felt like a steam roller flattened me instead!!And it lasted all day! So last night I put the 4 inch foam on top of my mattress and what a huge difference it made!! Now I only feel like a VW bug hit me!! The point of this story is to recommend the 4 inch foam pad. It really helped me to feel better all day.

Hey debabc,

I've had that problem with new mattresses (and mattresses I'm not used to) too.. We're due for a new one soon, but I'm not sure that I can handle the process of breaking one in.. I don't have a pad that thick on top of mine, but I do have one of those egg crate foam things.. I have been thinking about ordering that Cuddle Ewe mattress pad though (I think that's what it was called) since it was recommended to me by a real human being with fibromyalgia.. I'd prefer to sleep on a cloud though.. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Sorry to read about your bad bed experience.. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif

You think it's just because it's new? I hope so, although the pad did make it OK. The new mattress was not cheap. Those egg crate things don't do much--you really need the thick foam. I ordered mine through JCPenny catalog. I think I paid about a hundred bucks--a worthwhile purchase.

Hi debabc,

I'd like to know if your memory foam topper from Penney's had a strong odor to it? I've heard from others that other brands would have strong odors and would need to be aired before sleeping on it. I'm very sensitive to odors and that is one of the reasons I haven't purchased one yet. I had checked into the Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattresses, and theirs are quite expensive. Besides the expense of one, the odor is another reason for my not buying one yet. So, I'm curious about the one you purchased. The price seems reasonable, but I'm still concerned about the smell.

Thanks in advance for any further information about it.

Hey debabc & midnite,

I am supposed to be in bed right now.. It's amazing that I can turn a simple task like shutting off my computer into an excuse not to go to bed.. I need help.. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif

midnite - I know your question wasn't for me, but my egg crate really stunk when I first got it.. Luckily, it's a year or two old now so the chemical smell is gone.. I know what you mean about the odor thing though - especially since any little scent can set me off, so the big ones obviously do major damage.. It's really kind of strange.. My fiance' decided to buy this green apple Dawn & thought I'd be pleased, but I like the blue stuff, I am used to the blue stuff and the green stuff makes me sneeze.. It's the same with everything else, but the more chemicals a product contains, the sicker it makes me feel.. I don't think those Cuddle Ewe pads have foam in them, but I'll have to check before I decide to spend any money on one..

debabc - I'm not completely sure about the old bed/new bed thing.. I just know that I have trouble adjusting to any unfamiliar beds.. I agree that the egg crates are pretty much worthless, but it's better than sleeping directly on our bed.. We are really, really due for a new one.. We've moved the one we have now around the country for the past 7 years, so it's seen more states than a lot of people have..

Anyway, no more excuses.. I must shut this dreadful machine off and go to sleep.. Goodnight!

Take Care,
Melanie

Hi Melanie,

I had checked into the Cuddle Ewe underquilt, too, and the one thing that turned me off to it was the warmth factor of one. As is, I am usually too warm when I sleep, even in winter. That's just me though, and for those who could use the extra warmth, I would think it would be ideal.

They have a website that should answer all your questions about one.

Hi,
I sleep on a waterbed with a featherbed mattress on top of it and for me it is like sleeping on a cloud. My waterbed mattress originally had fiber throughout it so that my husband wouldn't bottom out and I wouldn't be laying higher than him since we are a mutt and jeff pair (5'2" and 6'4"). Eventually the fiber broke down and now my mattress is like a full floatation.

I have a lake house and I bought a select comfort mattress and it was miserable no matter what setting I had it on. I then bought another feather bed and put it on top and its still miserable to sleep on. Even my husband's back hurts and half the time we fall asleep on the couch and love seat and wake up less sore. So I guess eventually, when we retire up there, I will get rid of the select comfort mattress and replace it with a waterbed mattress.

Have any of you tried out a water bed?

Hi all,The new Sealy Mattress that I bought had the memory foam in it and it didn't smell at all. The foam topper mattress that I bought from JCPenny is not memory foam, just regular foam rubber, and I don't remember an odor from that. I had tried a memory foam mattress topper before and I was very disappointed when it lost it's memory and became quite flat and useless after only about 6 months. (Gee, maybe this brainfog stuff gets into our furniture--ever think about that, huh? LOL.)It cost more and was thinner than the regular foam, too. Anyhow the topper I am using now is 4 inches thick and has lasted several years with no problem. It does feel good to sleep on a mattress that I don't have to prop up with pillows to keep me on the bed at night! My old one was really gone.

Hi Pixiepoodle,

We used to have a waterbed about 28 years ago. I'm sure they have changed a lot since then. We eventually bought a regular bed and had that for ages. About 3 years ago, we purchased a Simmons Beautyrest pillowtop, and I thought that would help alleviate my back pain. Well, no such luck! I still awakened with severe back pain each morning. About a year ago, I started taking glucosamine chondroitin after researching it and learning of its benefits in reducing pain in the joints, specifically knee joints. Since I also had knee pain on occasion, I thought it would be worth trying and possibly my back would also benefit. Much to my surprise not only did it help my knees but my back pain lessened, too. Waking in the morning was better as the pain was lessened. After a few months taking the glucosamine, I stopped taking it and within a few weeks the back pain was back with a vengeance. I was again waking up each morning with severe back pain. Okay, so now I'm convinced I really need to stay on the glucosamine and started taking it again. It took about 6 weeks before I started feeling relief again and now my back is feeling much better. If I do major gardening or other tasks and overwork my back, then it will hurt worse but still not as bad as it did when I wasn't on the glucosamine chondroitin. I love the stuff and won't go off of it again.

So, my need for another sleeping unit isn't a #1 priority now, since the glucosamine is doing its job well. However, if it ever stops working as well, then chances are I'd opt to buy a Tempur-Pedic mattress topper. They give you a 90 day trial period and full refund if you're not satisfied. That seems pretty decent to me. If and when that time ever comes, and I again start awakening with bad pain, then I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and fork over the cash to buy one and give it a test.

Apparently, bedding comfort is a very individualized experience for each person. What works well for one may not be at all comfy for another. I guess we can all be thankful that we as consumers have an array of bedding options available.

Wishing everyone better and more comfortable sleep.

Take gentle care,
Midnite http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

Greatest type of mattress

Get one that allows your body to sink into the pile...not a soft mattress, but one designed to
give your body the support, but not place pressure on your joints as regular mattresses.

There are two specific brands out there that have been advertised on T.V. the one I am speaking of is
made on the principle of the NASA seats they use in the Shuttle.

Very Good Nights sleep to you
