View Full Version : Need Advice. How long for recovery from surgery?

My mother-in-law is having laproscopic colon surgery on the 8th. Surgery could be more extensive if they find more when they go in. I live 2 hours away and want to make arrangements to help her as much as I can. I have 3 small kids, 2 who attend school, so I have to consider arrangements for them. I plan on taking my 2 year old with as I have no other choice. Worst case scenario, how long will she be in the hospital? What capacities will she have when she is released? How difficult would it be having a toddler around? Would it be better to hire a nursing assistant? How long will she need someone to help her? Best case scenario?

Any advice is appreciated. I want to make matters better, not worse.

Not knowing how old your MIL is or how extensive the surgery involved it's hard to say. My hubby was in the Hospital for 10 days and is 44. After care once home was pretty minimal. He could get up and take care of himself for the most part. I am able to work and come home at lunch since I work close to home.
Having a toddler can be either a hindrance or an advantage: it may be good for her to have some distractions, but then it may be tiring< so much depends on the home and the room and space that there is for everyone.
It sounds like your heart is in the right place and i do wish her well with her recovery.
