View Full Version : Frustrated

I've been getting better and better since doing the vision therapy and VRTs combo. I went to the optometrist for the vision therapy today and told her how I've been responding to the patching- my left eye shuts off after 5-10 minutes except for the outside of it. The doctor kind of freaked about this and wants me the go to an opthamoligist ASAP. I'm annoyed because I don't want to add another appointment and another doctor. In addition to this vestib deal I am having an MRI tomorrow on my toe for his weird bump, my shoulder is hurting and apparently unstable so I'm going to PT. I'm just frustrated about it. I know there is nothing wrong and I'm sick of seeing doctors at this point. But I have to do it if I'm going to keep seeing her. Back to the PCP to get another referral and on and on. She must think I'm nuts at this point.
Thanks for listening guys!
Joni

Joni-
what do you mean by your left eye shuts off?

Sorry to hear about all the doctors appointments. I know it's fustrating. Go just to be on the safe side. Let us know what happens

Hi Joy. Its only when I patch my right eye. I tend to use my right eye only and suppress my left eye rather than use both. They never learned to work together when I was a kid so this is how they have compensated I guess. She has me patching an hour a day to get the left eye stronger. After a few minutes my right eye wants to work so bad its like its trying to see rather than the left, but its blocked.

Wow, that's weird. I guess since you said you had this since childhood, it's not related to ear stuff? Probably not helping it any either.

I'm still not sure I understood though (it's early and I don't drink coffee anymore ). What happens when you patch the right eye? What do you mean by "shut off?" That does sound scary, like your left eye just stops working. O.o

hmm... that is pretty strange but if you say is been happening since childhood then i guess its pretty normal for you... anyway.. i just wanted to say i sort of know what your going through with tons of doctors visits.. I've been there... but if you just keep your head up it will all be over soon...

What does she think the new doctor will be able to do for you?

I think she just wants me to rule out things. I made her nervous about something. Not sure what. I'm not concerned though. I did get an appointment for tomorrow so I'll go and just get it done. I don't really feel like explaining this whole vestibular thing to another professional who knows nothing about it.

I totally understand what you are saying. My thoughts are that this new person will confirm that you are on the right track, and that your eyes are just calibrating. Honestly, at this point you know more than they do.

Please let me know what happens!

Hah, I can imagine you don't want to explain the whole thing over and over. Not like most of em know anything about it anyway.

Good luck at the doctor, hope it'll be over quickly!

So as expected the eye doctor new NOTHING about vestibular disorders other than the fact that his mother was dizzy once and went to therapy for it. My eyes are fine other than the stuff I already new, but medically they are fine. At least that is done. Apparently my vision therapy doc freaks out about things often- he wasn't surprised about it! So back to the plan. Just keep going with the exercises and push push push.
Later gators.

see i don't understand that. if my mother was dizzy for a while and had to go to physical therapy for it, i would know everything about vestibular disorders. did he just not bother to find out what was wrong with his mom? hes a doctor for crying out loud. its sad how someone close to him could be sick and he has no clue about it.

Joni...I thought that is about what would happen. Geesh. You are doing great, and as I said...know more about this crap then the docs. I bet you would be a great "go to " person for vestibular therapy.

As for this doctor...I have to agree...If my mom was dizzy I would know why...I just don't get the medical profession at times.

Joni, keep it rolling...

I know what you mean about doctors, doctors, and more doctors. I just had my teeth cleaned a couple of days ago and my jaw is KILLING me and it popping more than usual. I know I clench and have TMJD and all of that jazz, but this is the first time it has actually looked swollen and has been painful. So guess what? Off to a TMJD specialist. Argggggggg!!!!!

Anyway, hang in there Joni! Hope you toe and shoulder get better quick too!

I know. The medical profession has so many problems. I think the model is upside down. The most obvious choice for a diagnosis is not necessarily the right one. We've become more and more specialized, but the docs seem to have forgotten that things are all connected. And they are connected in more ways than we can even understand.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure why he knew nothing considering his mother went through it. Sounded like it was a pretty quick process. Maybe she had BPPV, they did an epley, and then she was fine. Who knows.

Charlotte- I am still playing around with the idea of going into vestibular rehab. I know there's such a need for good therapists. Who knows what the future will bring!
