My dad was recently placed in a Alz facility that requires all meds be put on blister cards. My dad gets his meds from the VA, They do not package their meds in this way. I found one Pharmacy that will pack them for me for $5.00 a prescription. The problem is, he take 22 different meds per month, so it will be a real strain on his budget. Does anyone know if it's possible to purchase the blister cards and fill them myself? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated, I'm really not having any luck researching this one myself.

I read your post a couple of days ago but didn't know of how you might deal with this problem. $5.00 per prescription is prohibitive for most elderly people as they all seem to take many meds. I live in Canada and this service is offered for no charge to all elderly and my parents both were veteran's so most meds are covered too. When they lived at home the meds were done in blister packs by their pharmacy and now that my Mom is in a NH they handle the packaging in house through the pharmacy they use. It seems appalling to me that VA where you are will not do this at no charge if the faciiliy requires the packaging as part of his Alzheimer care program. Alternatively, the care facility should offer this service at a reasonable cost for it's residents. However, I know your health care system is very different than ours so how it should be is not how it is.


I've just looked on line to see what is offered and you can buy blister packs, the same type the pharmacy used for my parent's meds. for $19.99 for 6 cards - 6 week's supply. I cannot give you the website (due to regulations of this site) but if you do a search you should be able to find a site that offers these. The one I found offers every possible type of pill organizer and includes the type you are likely in need of. If you do purchase these, the pharmacy attached the labels of each pill that is in the pack to the back of the pack so those who administer can be sure of what is in the packs, so you will want to do that as well.
