View Full Version : Zoloft vs Celexa?

My doctor just started me on a low dosage of Zoloft. This is to treat minor depression and anxiety issues. I'm in my mid 30's, btw. She mentioned two different meds that she was considering for me to try - either Zoloft or Celexa, but she went with Zoloft.

My wife had good results with Celexa years ago and she was able to slowly get off without any problems.

I know everyone is different, but I'm wondering now if I should have taken the celexa instead, since I have seen my wife do so well on it with seemingly little side effects.

What are your thoughts on either of these?

I am also taking a low dosage (sorry, do not know the exact dose at this time) of Toprol for minor hypertension. I'm concerned about some of the things I've read about these meds + beta blockers (even though Toprol was never mentioned specifically).

I am now concerned about taking anything, but I need to get better and get a handle on my depression bc it's effecting home and work.

ANY suggestions regarding the diffs or experiences between the two would be appreciated! Any advice as to why she may have chosen Zoloft would also be appreciated.

ANYTHING! Thanks in advanced....

trying to get better.

Things work differently for different people, how long have u been taking the zoloft?

I take it as well, at 150 mg right now.

It takes time for u to notice anything, the drug needs at least a month or so in ur system before you notice any great change.

Stick with it, unless something happens in that one month frame,(That could be a negative reaction to said drug, Which could happen with anything not just zoloft)

Hey,

I've been on both.

Zoloft made me very anxious just looking at that little pill after 3 weeks. I stoped taking it.

celexa worked for a while. then i had to increase the dose. the higher dose made me very irratated to the point i wanted to seriously hurt something.

switched to generic prozac. this has been working great for me now.

I was on zoloft for many years and I was quite happy with the results. I believe they are both SSRIs so they are probably very similar. It's just one of those things...one works for some people, the other works for others. Sort of like otc pain meds. Some like advil, some like excedrine.

I've taken antidepressant drugs on and off over the years, continuously since 2000. In 03/04 I was diagnosed w BPII, I was presribed one med for BPII, two others for my depression, 50-100 mg zoloft and 150 mg bupropion [wellbutrin] 2x/day. I recently switched to celexa just simply to see if another ssri would perform better. It didn't work well for me. I had a host of side effects ranging from chronic headaches, moderate insomnia, sexual side effects [quite troublesome], difficulty concentrating, confusion and mental blocks. I was under the same assumption since celexa is in the ssri family, like zoloft, that it would be an easy transition. But, I was quite surprised by the side effects. I actually felt more depressed. So, if one seems ssri seems to be working well, and you're still not feeling at your best, be aware that switching to another may have some reprocussions. I went back to 100 mg zoloft along with my other meds. Obviously, everyone responds to antidepressant meds differently, this was my experience with celexa.
