I hate it when the docs say start iron. They should prescribe something that they know works well. I took Ferris Sulfate and became very ill. The doc didn't know what to give me said just ask the pharmacist and I did and became very ill from it.

The GI doc put my on Poly Iron Caps 150 mgs of elemental iron 2X daily. I was anemic with very low Ferritin. There is a proper amount that you need to be on. Your doctor should tell you how much to take we can't really tell you how much. It may not be right for you. FLFLOWERGIRL:)

I would call your doctor's office back and ask them to write a prescription for something more specific than just "iron pills". If it's available over the counter, I am sure the pharmacist will let you know. There are many types of iron supplements, each is absorbed a little differently and the side effects may be different as well.

I just started taking the prescription Chromagen Forte 2 weeks ago for anemia and very low ferritin levels. So far, minimal to no side effects... much better than the over the counter 'iron pills' I used to take. The downside was it was not a 'preferred' medication in my insurance plan, but I am going to continue with it. It is similar to another medication I took years ago called Niferex.

Good luck to you and keep us posted on how you are doing.
