My DD was born 10 days ago. I'm new at this so I'm not sure when things are serious. She's had a runny nose all day and has a fever of 100 degrees. The paper says to call if it's a 100.4 or higher. She's been eating but will only eat about five minutes every three or four hours. What should I do??

Watch how many wet diapers she has. The main concern when they're sick, ESPECIALLY if they have diarrhea or vomiting is dehydration. If she has a drop in the number of wet diapers you'll want to get her to a dr to check for dehydration. If her fever goes above 100.4, of course, call the doctor. I hope she feels better soon.

My DS was sick at 1 month old. We were at the hospital and they told us to bring in any baby that is younger than 3 months in with a fever over 99.5. There body cannot fight the fever and I was told not to give any baby tylonel or anything. So that is what they told me. I hope your DD gets better soon and watch for the dehyration. Good luck Sherri :)

I called her doctor and he said to bring her in tomorrow. But then about an hour after I got off the phone with him. I noticed her eyes are really really swollen, red and very watery. Do you think this is just a cold or something else?? Thanks for your replies.

I would call the doctor again or go in to the hospital. Better safe than sorry. Sherri :)

A baby this young running a fever and having a cold should be seen ASAP.They develop pneaumonia very quickly and it can be very bad.The eyes sounds like the cold is going into her sinus's and starting to cause conjunctivitus. If it where me I would not wait untill tommorow I would be at my local ER!

Teraina,

Did you take the temperature under the armpit, in the ear or rectally? If you DIDN'T take it rectally, then I would take your baby to the hospital immediatley. The truth is, I might take the baby in even if I just took it rectally and it was 100 degrees because this can be serious in a Newborn. The fever won't hurt the baby, but what is causing the fever can.

My DD went to a children's hospital at 9 days old because she had a fever. They ended up keeping her for 3 days. So I know they think it is serious.

I hope everything is ok!
