View Full Version : IUI after vasectemy reversal? A few questions...

My husband had a vas reversal two years ago. He had a sperm analysis done about 8 months after his reversal. It showed a few million sperm and 3% motility.

Are we good candidates for IUI? Or is IVF neccessary for our case?

Also, I'm expecting to ovulate in two weeks. If we went to a fertility doctor in this next week, can they do the IUI in time for my next ovulation cycle? I didn't know how long these clinics take to do their "thing".

We have very very good health insurance... do some health insurance providers pay for IUI?

And lastly, has anyone here successfully gone the IUI route after a reversal and had success?

Thanks for any feedback. I'm new here and looking forward to reading more.

Hi Tatum & welcome. :) I'm not sure whether your dr will recommend IUI or IVF for you and your DH, but I can answer some of your questions.

If this is your first visit to your dr, you probably won't be able to do an IUI within a week. Most dr's ask both you and DH to go through some tests before deciding on a specific treatment. If you really want to do an IUI right away, you could ask your dr if it's possible. If the timing is right w/ your cycle & your dr is willing, it would technically be possible.

You asked about insurance...Some insurance companies will pay for IUI's. Mine does, but it doesn't pay for IVF...not many do. Some companies will pay a portion of all infertility costs, and some will only pay for certain procedures, and some will pay nothing at all. If you're not sure what your plan covers, now is a good time to find out. You'll want to know what to expect in terms of cost before you start going for bloodwork and ultrasounds.

I hope that helped a little. Good luck!!

Hi Tatum

My IF specialist decided that IVF with ICSI had a better success rate so skipped the IUI and does so for most people. My insurance covers all infertility treatment 100% but we need to have been covered for a year before we can use it so we will be paying for our 1st cycle as I dont want to wait until next April. I know its not that far away from Jan which is when we do our 1st cycle but Im impatient and luckily DF is understanding. Well I wish you the best of luck and keep us posted.
